2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottled 10.28.14. Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a chalice on 03.08.15.
A: Cocoa, fudge, vanilla, and sweet coffee. The coffee didn’t seem overwhelming.
A: Thin dark tan head that quickly recedes to a ring.
T: Dark coffee dominates. Vanilla, cocoa, dark fruit, and oak barrel woodiness are subtle.
P: Medium chewiness with some bubbles. It’s on the syrupy side and has an astringent finish.
O: The coffee was too strong for me. It overpowered the barrel flavors. The alcohol was amazingly hidden as in most of Avery’s offerings. Unfortunately, I’m not a big fan of coffee so I drain poured it.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle from Marcus. Pours very dark brown, very, with a transient extremely dark tan head. Aroma of coffee and bourbon. Full bodied, but it quickly thins as the carbonation leaves. Heat doesn’t seem an issue til it hits the gullet. Flavor is coffee, bourbon, smooth burnt malt, and then heat. But it’s still just a flavor component. It goes pretty chocolate in the long finish. Pretty cool ale!

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Black pour. Big tan, chocolatey head. Little lacing. Slight bourbon nose atop chocolate, figs, coffee, and vanilla. Taste is very boozy followed by a very sweet malt. Cloying.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
sample @ EBF 2015. very dark brown with a low beige cap, minimal retention and lacing for its abv. fragrant bourbon barrels with vanilla peaking, dense roasted malts - some roasted acidity - well integrated though; burnt rock candy sugar, raisiny spiciness, booze - not off, just warming enough. low carbonation, full body, warming coffee and cream finish. pretty nice sippa.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Poured from bottle into snifter. Pours a very dark brown with slightly lighter head; head dissipates down somewhat, but sticks around a long while. Aroma is full of bourbon, vanilla, dark chocolate and coffee. Taste is initially dominated by the bourbon/vanilla notes, but then there is mocha and some very dark malt bitterness. Surprisingly carbonated - much fizzier than I expected. Long mocha finish.

Bottle. Pours black with brown head. Aroma is coffee, roast, bourbon, sweet. Taste is coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla, bourbon. Hides the alcohol very well. One of the better coffee stouts I’ve had.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
From notes on 3/30/15
On tap at Avery. Awesome. The chocolate and bourbon are much more prominent than the coffee. Still good amount of coffee comes through. How do they make an 18% ABV beer taste so smooth.
