Black pour. Aroma of chocolate and musty, sour ale, Bretty goodness. Flavor had very little sourness. Lots of chocolate and very nice barrel flavors. Lots of Zinfandel notes. Instead of this beer being a sour bomb, it was smooth and creamy. Mellowed out by the soft fruited wood. Finishes with a hint of dill and lots of dark fruit like dried cherries. I love how this beer smelled like a sour, tastes like a tannin-ful, dark, wood aged beer made to perfection with great patience and precision. nqualls (1429), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Nov 3, 2009 Source: 12 oz bottle split at Chuck’s.
Glass: Wine Glass.
Appearance: Dark brown pour with a thin tan head.
Aroma: Aroma was chocolate and typical sour notes.
Flavor: A hint of chocolate and caramel, with a weak sour finish.
Palate: Medium body with solid carbonation.
Overall: Easy drinking, but overall very disappointing. Was expecting something more like the JP sour stout, but this was lacking.
j12601 (1149), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA Oct 30, 2009 Bottle at the release of Flaming Fury. Pours brown with a thin white to beige head. Smoke, acid, and sour aromas. Toasty and sour with some roast, char, acid, and light vinegar. Finishes up with some more light sourness. Really interesting. kkearn (994), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 27, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours very deep brown, topped with a big khaki head that gradually fades to a thin cover. Very woody aroma, with notes of dark fruit, wild yeast, and some vinous notes. Flavor is sweeter than expected at first, with black cherry, dark fruit, and oak. Dry, oaky, tannic finish. argo0 (6842), Washington DC, USA Oct 27, 2009 12oz bottle, bottled 2/10/09, thanks PeterA. Small tan head atop brown-black body. Aroma is medium sweet, vinous, some oak, light Brett. Taste is medium sweet, vinous, some raisin/plum, light wood, caramel. Smooth medium-full body, light carbonation. bhensonb (4182), Woodland, California, USA Oct 25, 2009 Bottle. Pours very dark brown with a 5-finger dark tan head that cascades in sheets. Sort of like Guinness. Aroma is quite vinous. Seems to be oak as well. Medium body with mild carbonation. Flavor includes the typical zinfandel harshness. It’s also woody. The sour is muted, but strong too. The purple vinous finish is fantastic. This stuff is way underrated. Bockyhorsey (2487), Mesa, Arizona, USA Oct 20, 2009 Bottle. Good barrel wood aroma along with some molasas. Pretty much black body with tan head. Some rich chocolate roast up front. Beer got a sweet flavor towards the middle with a stong alcohol finish. Not bad but finish was little hard on the palate. BigBeer45 (675), Troy, Michigan, USA Oct 17, 2009 Bottled, has a date ‘Bottled Feb 10 2009’,
pours a dark ruby with dark brown and black looking hues, may be a little hazy to, even when held up to a light this ale looks dark, caramel and tan bubbles cover the ale, gave a two finger high or more head, leaves nice lacing on the glass, nice variable and fine bubbles make the head, bottle had a light hazy like film on the bottom,
fig and prune dark fruit aromas with brown sugar, sour funkiness, faint white and red wine fragrances in the background and some wood to,
flavors of dark fruit – raisin, fig, prune, with a sourness and orange citrus,
this ale has a pronounced sour-citrus and bitterness at the finish,
the sourness in this drink is distinct, each sip sends a sour punch tingle up my nostrils, somewhat like a strong alcohol drink,
the finish is mostly dry with citrus sour and bitterness, a trace of malt flavor trails thereafter,
medium mouth feel, carbonation feels nice on the palate and has a creamy bubbly sensation on the palate,
this drink was different and nice, I liked this blend of the Belgian dark strong ale flavors mixed with sour, a nice beer to experience.
