It’s not my favorite, I wouldn’t have it with a meal, I wouldn’t invest in it again if there are other untried beers, and in fact, I may never drink it again at all. But it’s worth at least one try. It’s an eminently intense brew, and profiles a lot of unique and rare flavors. I wouldn’t have it again not because I dislike it, but I’m not sure I could ever think of a situation where it would be appropriate. The Avery Brabant’s head occupies a light brown shade of the color spectrum, but there’s little time for observation. The Brabant’s aroma wastes no time in rushing out of the glass and up your nose, almost like a bully rearing somebody’s head up with two fingers in their nostrils. It’s at once sour and spicy. White wine, raisins and fig spearhead the aroma, sharp and pungent, and yet the Brabant retains a steady accent of sophistication, like an expensive cologne or perfume. This might come from the slight hint of chocolate. The taste does not parallel the aroma’s sourness, save for the mild Brettanomyces quality, whose pungency, mixed with the distinct flavor of bourbon and an aftertaste of scotch, makes this one of the most intense beers I’ve ever had. Really, I’ve had little or nothing else quite like it, and I like it for it’s exceptional flavors. I’m just not sure I have the fortitude to drink another beer so heavily laden with the tastes of hard liquors - the very liquors I’ve surrendered in my preference for...well, beer.

Nice surprise from J12601- Thanks Jay! pours a coca cola looking dark brown with a small tan fizzy head. Aroma of wood, grapes, red wine, lemon, dark fruits and a little bretty funk, although it isn’t very prominent. flavor has a weird earthy sourness to it with additional notes of stale bread, rotten fruit, tart cherries, a bit of medicine, and a hint of chocolate. Sounds like a gross combination, but I actually enjoyed this beer quite a bit. Somehow it worked. I’d drink this again. TheEpeeist (1500), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA

Noy very complex but pretty good. potbeercollege (471), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 25, 2009 Bottle. Dark brown to blackish with small white head. Aroma is interesting - the Zinfandel is definitely noticeable, along with the brett - notes of fruitiness, wood and leather. Taste is slightly bitter and dry, much like a dry red wine. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 25, 2009 Bottle: Deep dark brown with a crimson hue in the light with a dense khaki film. Rich vinous, fruity underlying toasted malt nuances- there’s some notes of blackberries, currants and fig- quite vinous. The wild yeast is there giving off a touch of leather and cherry pit. Some rich barrel character as well with soft vanilla and more toasted oak nuances. Fairly complex in the nose. Substantial body with mild carbonation- creamy feel to it. Spicy tannic flavor. Some tart fruitiness- a touch of vanilla from the barrel with an underlying blackberry note and tart vinousness. Some cherry pit brett notes- the tannins are a bit excessive making it a bit astringent- there’s some vegetal-like woody notes in there accompanied by a toasted barley background. I think time will mellow out the tannins to make this stuff more cohesive and quaffable. Interesting. beachbum25 (807), Powellville, Maryland, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 19, 2009 12 oz bottle-Deep mahogany pour w/a slight head & great lacing. Huge aroma’s of dark fruit & wine, just overpowering. Very winelike, flavors of dark fruit, red grapes, candied sugar, peat. The wine barrel aging really shows thru here in a positive way. Has a high alcohol kick to it, but it is very smooth. Great after dinner sipper, would be good w/a steak dinner as well. Long, full finish, good stuff! mar (1985), Dallas, Texas, USA
