Smells sweet, floral, herbish, is cloudy, golden brown, great palate, taste is a little strong
meeple (52), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Mar 9, 2009 Bottle. Cloudy brown-orange, small off-white head dissapates rapidly. Nose is predominently caramel, some apple. A little spice, caramel, funky bitterness in the end. Very off-putting, the funk. Maybe just a bad bottle, but not recommended.
Batch 2 NDbeerdrinker (164), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Mar 7, 2009 Bottle of Batch 3. Pours a hazy orange-amber with a one finger white head. Aroma is yeasty, orange peel, and some malts. Taste is Belgian yeast, spices, orange peel. Hop and spice lingering aftertaste. Pretty nicely done, and an interesting story of how the beer came to be. WesKBob (317), Bethany, Oklahoma, USA Mar 7, 2009 Pours a hazy copper-brown color with thin white head. Aroma is dark fruits, sweet cherries. Flavor is sweet with sugar notes and the distinctive Belgian yeast. Mouthfeel is a little oily, but not distractingly so. Not the greatest Belgian style ever, but a very nice beer. brokephibroke (137), Mead, Colorado, USA Mar 5, 2009 On tap. Hazy brown minimal white head. Nice balance, clearly a quality Belgian. dchmela (1406), Orlando, Florida, USA Mar 5, 2009 Batch 2 bottle courtesy Durhambeer. Pours a hazy copper with a thick tight white head. Malty sweet aroma, candy sugar, cherry and funk Belgian yeast aroma. Spicy hop bite starts off the taste, with candy sugar, bitter orange peel and some sweet cherry. Nice thick malt body, with lots of Belian yeasty things going on. Good brew, not great. Lubiere (4464), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Mar 5, 2009 Hazy brown red ale with a thin white head. In aroma, restrained candy sugar, cherry, and light funkyness. In mouth, a sweet malt with light coriander, cloves, orange peels, and light hopping. Medium bodied. On tap at Dirty Truth, Inbièrenationale IV, May 2007. daleharshman (181), San Diego, California, USA Mar 5, 2009 22 ounce bottle from Clem’s Bottle House (San Diego, CA). This was Batch 1 from early 2007. Pours into tulip glass a copper color with three fingers of rapidly diminishing head. Aroma is rather light -- moderately sweet and malty with typical Belgian yeasty tones. Flavor is mildly sweet and with a light hop flavor. Hints of dark fruit and bourbon-vanilla. Funk is almost non-existent in this one. Smooth and very drinkable for a stronger Belgian ale. I had never had Salvation from either Russian River or Avery. This is a good beer, but with so much effort from two great brewers, I might have expected more.
