Commercial Description:
Salvation. The name of two intricate Belgian-style ales created by us, Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing and Adam Avery of Avery Brewing. After becoming friends a few years ago, we realized that we both had a Salvation in our line-ups. Was it going to be a problem? Should one of us relinquish the rights? "Hell no!" we said. In fact, it was quickly decided that we should blend the brews to catch the best qualities of each and create an even more complex libation. In April 2004, in top-secret meeting at Russian River Brewing (well actually it was packed in the pub, and many were looking over our shoulders wondering what the hell was going on), we came up with the perfect blend of the two Salvations. Natalie, Vinnie’s much more significant other, exclaimed, "We should call this Collaboration, not Litigation Ale!" "Perfect!" we shouted. We celebrated deep into the night, (or is it morning?). Fast forward to November 14, 2006. After talking about it for over 2 years we finally decided to pull the trigger and Vinnie flew out to Avery to brew his Salvation exactly as he does in his brewery. This was blended with Avery’s Salvation December 11th, 2006. We hope you enjoy it as much we enjoyed brewing and blending it.

22 oz bomber. yeasty grapes, sugar, and runts bananas fill the aromas while burnt orange, dull brown hues fill my glass. killer lacing, i might add. cold white grapes, fuzzy peaches, and dark ripe plums dominate the aromas with subtle yeasty sugars and brown sugar spice hit on the back palate. a certain juiciness hits on the flavor as well, but i can’t get to the center of it any deeper than just "juicy fruit," as in, the candy. palate is smooth, sweet, and hints of saltiness, but nothing overt. i dig.

I just drank a bomber of this Avery offering and I loved the entire experience. Aroma- Bananas and brown sugar, nice and soft (if that makes any sense). Appearance- Orange in color, tan head stuck around for a little while. Nice Crystaline depth. Taste- Banana and cloves, some dates at the end. There is a strong toasty malt flavor, either from Belgian biscuit malt or Belgian Aromatic malt (my guess, probably both). It has a definate caramel taste as it warms. I caught a hint of smoke at one point. although I doubt they added any kind of smoked malt, but you never know. It could be from the biscuit malt. Drinkability- Absolute. I sat in my back yard, watched my dogs play while a storm rolled in. I thoroughly enjoyed life while I enjoyed every drop. I was pretty disapointed when it was finished, but was pretty hammered also. Note: I am a homebrewer, and I notice that I get a different feeling when I get drunk off homebrew as opposed to commercial examples. With this beer, it felt like homebrew. I dug it.

Pours an hazy amber color with a small off white head. Nose of mild tartness upfront with dark fruits, clove and caramel lingering in. Initial taste begins sweet with caramel and cloves dominated. Mid palate is earthy and yeasty. Finishing mildly spicy, rhiney hop balance. Medium body, good head retention. Good palate duration.

20080604 Bomber. I’ve been sitting on this one for a while assuming it would need time to cool off like so many Avery beers. Hazy dark caramel color with lasting, creamy beige head. Aroma is fruity and yeasty with strong cooked apple and raisin notes and hints of savory spice reminding of wintery pies being baked in the distance. Nice creamy mouthfeel with only light prickly carbonation breaking up what might be otherwise a bit unctuous as it does have a coating feel on the lips. The flavors are pretty standard for a solid Belgian inspired strong brown ale, with fruit and spice to mirror the aromas, a touch of ripe fruits, plum, apple, pear, raisin. Good all around stuff that, for the price, is a fair replacement for some of the Belgian equivalents. Certainly one of the nicest and most mild Avery bombers I’ve tried.

2007 (batch 1) bottle sampled May ’08.

Pours a rich brown with a nice head. Lovely caramel-meets-fruity tripel aroma and a flavor that follows. Ample carbonation provides a light spritzy mouthfeel that hides the 9% abv. Ahhh...very nice beer, a really pleasant surprise from one that I’d had relatively low expectations for.
