mmmbeer (737), Austin, Texas, USA Feb 29, 2008 Pint bottle (Batch 2) poured into tumbler- poured semi transparent slightly murky dirty brown, high-medium carbonation, off white head bubbled and laced away slowly, aroma of a candied malt with a light clove and pepper note. Hits the mouth with a medium body, many various spice notes (pepper, clove to name a few), the malt is strong but not overbearing, finishes with a sweet and acidic (hop) undertone. I’m beginning to think the brewers at Avery are evil henchmen wanting world domination because there are not many brews from them that I can rate low, including this one. Solid. JCB (1716), Durham, North Carolina, USA Feb 26, 2008 22oz from Whole Foods, Durham. Now with about a year on it, the time is right to sample this delightful brew again. It’s still as pleasant as it was fresh - while it lacks the vibrancy of its youth, its got real depth and a mellow quality that suits the complex flavor profile. Not that it lacks a pert hoppy quality, but the dark fruits, malts, and a lovely peppery aftertaste have really started to meld impressively. Great stuff. AmEricanbrew (1747), Louisiana, USA Feb 26, 2008 Garnet color with a frothy head, nice lacing. Decent smell is of black pepper, spices. pale malts. Medium body. Good taste mirrors the aroma with sweet and dry malts, black pepper. Not too bad. 467 CelticBrew (676), The Crystal Coast, North Carolina, USA Feb 25, 2008 Shared at Steves house, poured dark amber from bomber. Aroma of candied sugars, peppers, oak moss, prunes and cloved banana’s. Flavour is of a smooth belgium ale, lovely blends of herbs, oak, candied sugar plums with banana cloves. Hops give this wonderful beer particular balance that begs to be drank with good friends and family. msante79 (784), Orland Hills, Illinois, USA Feb 21, 2008 Bomber. Pours deep amber with a off white head. Taste is roasted malts, brown suger, and cinnimun. Nice balance. Though it was a little thin in mouthfeel. I never had a Belgain Strong Ale like this. nearbeer (1833), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Feb 21, 2008 650 ml, bottled Jan 2007. Dark amber with a large and lasting head. Nice lace. Complex aroma has spicy light and dark fruit, molasses, oak, and herbs. Great flavor blend of earthy oak, dates, cocoa, peppery caramel apple, slight bubblegum and a hint of alcohol. Medium body is silky smooth, slightly tingly on the tongue, and just dry enough on the finish. Unique Belgian, and a much better solution than no Salvation, and endless meetings with $400/hr lawyers. arjoseph (594), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 20, 2008 Bottle into Pizza Port pint glass; purchased at Green’s, Atlanta. Smells smoky and peaty, like dry autumn leaves with a little mold on them, and also buttery over a little bit of roastiness. Clear ruby amber in the glass with a big fluffy taupe head. Malty, leafy, and roasty again in the mouth; the malts are balanced by very dry hops that are restrained in their bitterness and flavor contribution. Brown sugar is in there as well. Very tasty, and despite the relatively high abv, seems like a delicious session beer. travita (1861), Frisco, Texas, USA Feb 20, 2008 Amber colored with a nice head. Belgian style ale. Sweet smell and strong fruity tastes. Different fruits come through in the taste and smell. I liked it but not as much as I thought I would.
