Commercial Description:
Salvation. The name of two intricate Belgian-style ales created by us, Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing and Adam Avery of Avery Brewing. After becoming friends a few years ago, we realized that we both had a Salvation in our line-ups. Was it going to be a problem? Should one of us relinquish the rights? "Hell no!" we said. In fact, it was quickly decided that we should blend the brews to catch the best qualities of each and create an even more complex libation. In April 2004, in top-secret meeting at Russian River Brewing (well actually it was packed in the pub, and many were looking over our shoulders wondering what the hell was going on), we came up with the perfect blend of the two Salvations. Natalie, Vinnie’s much more significant other, exclaimed, "We should call this Collaboration, not Litigation Ale!" "Perfect!" we shouted. We celebrated deep into the night, (or is it morning?). Fast forward to November 14, 2006. After talking about it for over 2 years we finally decided to pull the trigger and Vinnie flew out to Avery to brew his Salvation exactly as he does in his brewery. This was blended with Avery’s Salvation December 11th, 2006. We hope you enjoy it as much we enjoyed brewing and blending it.

Bottle. Body-very hazy dirty brown body with a ½ inch loose foamy head. Nose-light malt extract, stale raisin, brown sugar, molasses, very very light smoked meat. Taste-high CO2, grape, earthy (wheaty), soil, hint of Dr. Pepper, clay, light tobacco, light metal on the back end, hint of coffee, cinnamon, burnt caramel, scorched butter. Big bitter earthy component that comes across to me as clay. Wood, unsweet fig, low-medium fruity esters from the yeast, light raw doughy flavor. Overall very very good, maybe the best session beer ever. Not sweet at all, not over powering. In 2 words: earthy and excellent.

Amber in color. Aroma of raisins, toffee and nutty, and of course a bit o’ the hops. Good mouth feel, yummy maltiness with a small balance of hops. Notes of dark fruits, and some nuttiness. There funny story behind this beer, ask Adam Avery.

Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm. Amber/orange color, offwhite head. Nutty aroma, some raisins, quite malty but with some hoppy notes. Malty, fruity flavor, some yeast and raisins.

From a 22oz Bottle. Pours a murky, tanned copper brown color with a thick head of well sustaining foamy tan. Aroma of apricot brandy, toasted banana bread, chewy toffee, and flambeed pears. Nice balance between fruity esters and spicy phenols. Medium light bodied, creamy carbonated mouthfeel. The flavors are a bit heavier and darker than the nose, but equally satisfying. Starts out with some prune and gentle leathery character, morphs into a nutty caramel treat spiced with nutmeg, and then finishes dry and somewhat roasty with a hint of molasses and mild pipe tobacco. Minor alcohol warming on the finish, but overall a well-balanced, enjoyable beverage. This definitely tastes like a cohesive brew with a unifying idea, and isn’t suffering from any muddled or busy traits.

I’ve already rated the Avery Salvation and found it to be an excellent strong Belgian ale. Mixing it with the Russian River product of the same name is an interesting idea that most certainly produced a finer product. The Collaboration is a darker russet color with much more of a burnt caramel and licorice flavor. Very good indeed!

tried on tap. Interesting idea. It seems that its somewhat hoppy character knocks it astray from what I anticipate in a Belgian strong ale.

A good Belgian strong with lieable wine-like tannins and a bit of sourness. Not for the novice as much as one who appreciates the above. Dark reddish brown and yeast and wine-like aromas. Medium mouthfeel. Very quaffable.

Bottle. Pours a clear deep amber with a large long lasting off-white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma of caramel, dark fruit, and light yeast spice. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium mouthfeel with a mild amount of bitterness and well hidden alcohol. Very Good.
