mcbackus (725), Merritt Island, Florida, USA Jun 27, 2007 bottle: pours a dark copper orange with a very large white head with some lacing. aroma is initially funk and yeast with a bit of caramel malt and a small touch of hops. flavour is bready, funky, yeast, caramel malt, with a dark fruit finish and just a bit of bitter drying on the palate. over all a very good beer. mabel (2530), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 26, 2007 [300-20070508] 330mL (w/ jerc). Aroma has a little citrus hops, coriander, and sweet hints of orange peel. Cloudy, red brown body with a big foamy medium-lasting light tan head. Very bitter hops or coriander flavour, medium alcohol kick, toasted malt characteristics and some weird spice rind. Very bitter dry medium-full body. Interesting to try but not blended well for my palate. Ughsmash (3983), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Jun 26, 2007 Bottled at Hopleaf. Poured deep caramel with a short off-white head.. some scattered lacing followed it down. Aroma picked up dusty vinous and vanilla notes first, followed by sweet biscuits at the core.. warmth brings out other nice dark fruits and a great, deep caramelization. Flavor found rich caramel and vinous notes at the core with spicy pepper and alcohol warmth extending outward.. rather complex with a spicy vinous finish. Creamy on the palate with mild bitterness.. this took a lightning-fast, dry fall off the palate on the back-end, which was a cool effect.. warm and engaging. Nice one! I was looking forward to trying this thanks to the Russian River contribution. While most Avery beers have been disappointing I was hoping they worked with someone else to improve the quality. It was a $6.99 gamble that was almost worth the cost. In the end I’m glad I got to share the bottle with hezron and malachi - it would have been tough to knock out by itself thanks to the overpowering booziness.
Aroma / Appearance - The deep red body filtered out most light but let a little trickle through. Sour cherries, raspberries, fruitiness and a trace amount of funkiness complete the nose which is more Avery than Russian River. A peppery backbone improves things a little bit but not enough to make it stand out.
Flavor / Palate - Malt, caramel and chocolate form an initial impression which is more Avery than Russian River. The RR Salvation has been ruined by being combined with the Avery. Instead of an enjoyable experience it turns into a peppery boozy malt liquor. If it weren’t so alcoholic it would be far better. shadey (1496), Rochester, New York, USA Jun 25, 2007 22 oz bottle. Dark brown/red pour with a head of thin white cream and froth. Aroma is spicy Belgian yeast with a touch of sourness. Flavor is quite spicy with a lot of yeast. No sourness in the flavor. Body is right on. Overall ok. MadIndian (987), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 25, 2007 A gift from Dennis Bell. Copper pour with massive carbonation and fluffy head. Yeast, sweet cinnamon aromas can be detected. Slight fruit and hop taste, rather smooth and well blended. Very good !!! mjg74 (1995), La Mesa, California, USA Jun 18, 2007 Bomber from Keg & Bottle 2. Pours a hazy brownish/orange color. Sweet fruity aroma with a hint of yeast. Some sweet banana as well. Sweet and creamy flavors. Some banana and spices. Some roasted qualities with an almost tobacco quality. Nice stuff. oakbluff (298), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Jun 16, 2007 Poured into my RR tulip glass. Cloudy prune brown, huge off white head. Smell is sweet belgian candi sugar and dark fruit. Taste- initially quite sweet, but finishes dry due to the sugar. Lots of dark fruit, spice and complex malt. Hops are more noticable than in the average belgian dark and are a welcome presence. Mouthfeel is smooth with medium carbonation. A great brew. I have not tried either of these individually, but have a bottle of RR Salvation in my cellar ready to compare on a special occasion.
