kramer (2406), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 12, 2007 22 oz bottle, a generous gift from Zathrus13. Pours a clear bright amber body under a two finger foamy light beige head that left lots of sticky lacing. The aroma is quite malty with lots of caramel and toffee, heavy fruitiness, alcohol fumes, a little grape, and some brown sugar. The flavor is weighted to the malt side heavily, but there’s some noticable hops in there too keeping it from being overly sweet. Lots of toffee, alcohol, and some grape. Mouthfeel is thick and full bodied, but just short of sticky and cloying. Typical Avery moderate forced fizzy carbonation. Overall, I don’t think that this brought too much to the table. Another generic American Belgian Strong Ale. SuzyGreenberg (1318), Seattle, Washington, USA Jun 10, 2007 22 oz. bottle - i’ll admit that i’m a bad judge of belgain ales at this point; pours clear amber with sweet aromas; very sweet with strong aftertaste and lots of spice jhumphries69 (717), Tyrone, Georgia, USA Jun 5, 2007 Pours a somewhat dark orangey-brown with a thick tan head that fades to a thin covering but leaves no lace on the glass. The aroma is quite mesmerizing and complex: alcohol, lots of fruit (prunes, dried cherries, bananas), hints of smoky wood and grass, and some caramel. The flavor starts very malty with some fruit and wood. The middle of the tongue detects a nice interplay between fruity hop bitterness, crazy Belgian yeast esters, fruit, spice (cinnamon, pepper), and sweet toffee-like malts. The finish is full-bodied, spicy, and bittersweet with some fruit and caramel. The after-taste is fruity and bittersweet. The mouthfeel is very nice and creamy - just the right amount of suds, not too thin and too thick. Overall - a very tasty endeavor. I’ll have to dig up my notes on Avery’s Salvation and compare... BigBeer45 (676), Troy, Michigan, USA Jun 4, 2007 Bomber- bottled Jan of 2007: a hazy brown amber pour into a tulip glass with a foamy off-white head, roast malt, some sweet and dark fruit aromas, brown sugar, raisins, the sweetness does not smother the fruit and malt fragrances, flavors of sweet dark malt, caramel, faint apple, berries and plum, some dark bread flavor, medium plus mouth feel and creamy, some spicy pepper in the finish, faint alcohol on the tongue as it warms, this was much better then I expected, glad the sweetness did not overflow the brew as it warmed up, nice to have a sweet strong ale that is balanced, this is on the medium plus spectrum of a malt flavored strong ale but is very nice. TheCheeseMan (538), Saint Cloud, Florida, USA Jun 3, 2007 Pours a warm chestnut brown, with a moderate head, though it dissipates rapidly. Aroma is typicaly Belgian. Yeasty, malty, rock sugar-ish, some burnt sugar and a touch of spice. Bit of a let-down, but a solid beer. pineypower (1076), Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA Jun 2, 2007 Sat for 6 months and it might have needed a bit more. Pours out a cloudy light brown color with an off white head. Sweet aroma some malt. Taste is sweet, with candi sugar some fig and other sweet fruit notes. Slight yeast and alcohol on the finish. Interesting idea for a beer PorterPounder (3132), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Jun 2, 2007 Savannah, Ga. - Habersham Beverage Warehouse - 22 oz bomber. Murky, dark copper pour with a nice creamy off white head that leave sticky lacing on the glass. Licorice, cotton candyin the aroma. Sweet, malty flavor with some candied sugar notes, maple syrup, a hint of licorice. Not quite as complex as I thought it would be, but still packed with flavor. High alcohol content is apparent, but not distracting. Thickish, creamy mouthfeel. A nice way to waste away a rainy Saturday afternoon. jmikolich (405), Athens, Ohio, USA Jun 1, 2007 Bottle Dec 06, Nice looking beer with a good Belgian Head, Smells fantastic nice and malty, almost bready, taste is creamy and i pick up some nutmeg/cinnamon flavor a very interesting brew with an interesting story.
