marcus (1826), Sacramento, California, USA May 13, 2007 This brown ale poured with a thin off-white head. The initial flavor is malty and carbonated with a long bitter finish and a yeasty aroma. There is a nice complexity that features buttery caramel and pleasant spices. This blend is better than either brewery’s Salvation brew, so the collaboration should make everyone happy. RiverHorse (454), New Jersey, USA May 13, 2007 Pours a dark reddish brown color with a nice firm bubbly head. The smell was malt, raisins, carmel and spice. The taste is nicley balanced with a good mouthfeel and just the right amount of carbonation. I would have liked to compared the RR and Avery Salvation side by side before tasting this one. A nice combined effort from two great breweries. StewardofGondor (1934), Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA May 12, 2007 Dark translucency and magnifying caramel copper in color with thin fuzzy white outgrowth on top. Brilliant lacing as it dances around. Aroma rings with amaretto caramels, fog and farmland, honeydew and hops. Sweet cream and cotton wheat. Could go either way. Unbalanced, gummy, high gravity hesitancy. Sweetened oats with marigold butter glossing. Honeyed saaz with buttery meringue sweet rolls. Leans toward the Avery persuasion. Fuzzy carbonation with subtle, spiced clover et apples. Hints of buttery toffee on grahams provides a gloss, that lays on a wax coating over the tongue and builds through to the finish. Thanks, Chris! mds (2112), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 11, 2007 Draught. Pours a very dirty brown-sewage colour with a medium creamy mocha head. The aroma consists of toast, butterscotch, nuts, and very faint maple. Sweet grass and almond flavours. Creamy body with warming alcohol. Candyish at times but otherwise quite solid and interesting.
Snifter at The Liars’ Club in San Diego on March 26, 2007. dmac (1420), Toms River, New Jersey, USA May 11, 2007 22 oz bomber. Poured out what looked like brown river water, very muddy appearance with a TON of floaties, and a head that had a creamy center yet very foamy on the sides. Aroma was rather nice with lots of yeastiness, rather sweet with slight notes of sugar. Flavor has initial sweetness followed by only a mild spiciness that I am used to in my Belgians. For a Belgian this one is suprisingly quaffable but leaves me wanting a little my spicy/peppery yeast flavor that I love in my Belgians. jerc (3861), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 10, 2007 Bottle. Hazy red-amber body with a big billowy creamy head and some floaties. Big yeasty character to the aroma, with musty toasty malt presence, and light caramel with a touch of spice - I think coriander? Zippy yeastiness in the flavour, more dry toasty malt up front that gives way to a pleasant sweet caramel malt in the middle. Bitter spice grows steadily with each sip. Hint of anise and dusty wood notes - not dissimilar to the remainders in a malt bag after it has been emptied. Very light fruity notes throughout. This is pleasantly complex, but the dominant flavours get to be a bit too much rather quickly. Surprisingly bitter aftertaste, and a lingering toasty malt that reminds me of a vienna lager. Medium palate (3+). Aftertaste is not particularly endearing. rsauermann (38), Arlington, Texas, USA May 9, 2007 On tap at the Saucer in FTW. Very good belgian strong. Pours dark gold. The yeast stands out in this one. Light to medium body. 1FastSTi (2551), Glendale, Wisconsin, USA May 9, 2007 I believe I have Chris to thank for this one. The beer pours to a dark orange/red body with a very creamy/bubbly/rocky white head. The aroma is huge. Sweet yeastiness, nice funkiness, musty basements, very balanced with some lemons. The flavor is very yeasty and nicely blended. Some fruits to be had. The palate is nicely textured, yeast enhances the palate to a moderately full bodied feel.
