Commercial Description:
Salvation. The name of two intricate Belgian-style ales created by us, Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing and Adam Avery of Avery Brewing. After becoming friends a few years ago, we realized that we both had a Salvation in our line-ups. Was it going to be a problem? Should one of us relinquish the rights? "Hell no!" we said. In fact, it was quickly decided that we should blend the brews to catch the best qualities of each and create an even more complex libation. In April 2004, in top-secret meeting at Russian River Brewing (well actually it was packed in the pub, and many were looking over our shoulders wondering what the hell was going on), we came up with the perfect blend of the two Salvations. Natalie, Vinnie’s much more significant other, exclaimed, "We should call this Collaboration, not Litigation Ale!" "Perfect!" we shouted. We celebrated deep into the night, (or is it morning?). Fast forward to November 14, 2006. After talking about it for over 2 years we finally decided to pull the trigger and Vinnie flew out to Avery to brew his Salvation exactly as he does in his brewery. This was blended with Avery’s Salvation December 11th, 2006. We hope you enjoy it as much we enjoyed brewing and blending it.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Gilly’s, batch # 3 (Feb 2009) 8.97% ABV

Aroma: Banana, clove, some bread, yeast, sugar, a pretty complex and interesting nose
Appearance: Hazy dark orange/red color, decently thin white head
Flavor: A pretty complex sweetness that works pretty well, but not great...
Palate: Decent mouthfeel here, medium to full bodied
Overall Impression: I really like the idea of this beer and the story.
As of today (5/19/09) I’ve never had anything from Russian River, though I have heard good things, and I’d love to try something fully made by those guys. I have had a few others from Avery and I like what they are trying to do most of the time...

batch #2 -- nose is ultra candy sugar sweet, a bit off putting actually. candy sugar gives way to sticky malt -- very American, not belgian at all. appearance is very pretty, dark rust and very cloudy. flavor is of belgian spice first and foremost, cloying malt sweetness in the aroma is not so pronounced at all in the flavor. some esthers but no outright belgian yeast character or funk. flavor evolves over time into strange unknown esthers that combine (or are caused by....chicken or the egg?) with the alcohol into something that beguiles me. this beer is a thinker...seemed to be a disappointment on many accounts from the start but caused intregue later.

Bottle from City Beer in SF. Hazy orangish amber color with an off-white head. Aroma of yeast, banana, clove, spices, dark fruit, and alcohol. Flavor was similar, banana and clove stood out. Fairly sweet and complex. Smooth, medium-full palate. Has hints of both breweries in it.

Bomber, I was not too impressed with this maybe because I had it after the world wide stout. I noticed a banana type aroma. It has heavy carbonation with what I thought was a copper, earthy taste with some sweetness to it. Bitter and funky. I wont seek it out but wont turn it down.

Draft, pours a cloudy tannish orange color with a beige head. Very nice lacing along the glass. Aroma of yeast, wheat, caramel malt, dried fruit, and spices. Similar taste with an additional presence of hops in the finish. Slightly chewy mouthfeel.

Batch #3, bottled Feb. 2009. Pours a hazy, light brown color with a rocky white head. Aroma is ripe fruit, sugar, and a touch of alcohol. Taste is crisp and enjoyable - sugar and spice plus quite a bit of cloves - almost like a wheat beer on steroids. Thin body. Drinkable and enjoyable.

Bottle from Total Wine. Pour is Red/Orange, a bit cloudy with an off-white head and lots of lacing. Aroma is citrus hops and malt. Taste is pretty complex, citrus, apple, yeast and malt. Really good, nice surprise.

Aroma of caramel and dark fruit. The beer is very pale orange with a small head. The flavor is of caramel and prunes with a dry finish - which really fits the beer.
