Nice head retention, beautiful orange/copper color, and great clarity (when poured sober). Nose is awesome. Taste is unmistakably Belgian. This beer is impossible to categorize. It’s a collaboration of two existing beers, after all. A great beer to have from the tap, and then from the bottle in one night. I highly recommend this for any Belgian beer fans.

22oz bottle..batch 6..into Trappist chalice..dark brown.honey like crimson color..more carbonation than expected..aroma of figs..honey..cinnamon..touch of clove..brown sugar..mouthfeel is pretty light and creamy at first with a nod towards a more medium finish dominated by that sugar..abv is concealed well..overall not as complex as I would have liked..another example of a collaborative effort not living up to expectations...doesn’t come off as a Belgian strong ale...

This one’s really nice. Can’t truly place the style. Definitely Belgian notes of some sort. Funky old world yeast in the aroma, and in the taste at the back end. Sort of a dirty orangish, light brown color. Taste is sweet malt -- think brown sugar and molasses and caramel in particular -- with maybe, just maybe a hint of spice and the aforementioned funk. Aromas of cinnamon and wood. Crimson brown appearance with nice retention. Well balanced flavors of brown sugar, maple, molasses and roasted grains. Finish is dry with hop presence. Overall, a fair beer with nice balance. Nothing too special.

Unsure of the cvintage. This one is a semi-tart/sourish beer with some pronounced belgian yeast notes and a vinous fruit character.

22 oz. bottle marked on label as Batch 6 bottled Jan 2012. Snifter shows a deep amber with lots of conditioned yeast floating around even with a slow canted pour. Nose is complex. Aromas of dried fruit, Belgian sugars, sweet caramel and yeast. Flavors of Belgian yeast and doughy bread, dark candied sugar and again the dried fruit. Decent brew. Respectable Belgian.

22 oz bottles served in a Trois Pistoles snifter. Notes from Batch #5 bottled Jan. 2011 and served another bottle in August 2012.
A: modest size and short-lived, light tan head reduces to a lasting ring and leaves some spotty lacing. Clear (1st pour) amber/copper body. Slightly hazy after adding remainder of bottle.
Jumped into this without knowing what style to expect, immediately finding a great imitation (no offense, Avery/RR) of a fine Belgian dark ale. Using the right glassware for this, then. Not to say this tastes just like some other beer, but it is an excellent example of a style mastered by some Belgians and few others.
The nose is nicely fruity (dates, prunes, raisins), sweet, and lightly spicy including a bit of white pepper. Nonetheless, it is not quite as complex, deep and rich as the flavor. Seems rather clean for this style. Sweet up front, it turns nicely tart and mildly bitter in the finish, then leaves a fruity (mainly dark fruits but also cherries) and lightly sweet aftertaste. The nearly 9% ABV is very well hidden! Great complexity, with numerous flavor components that seem to vary in composition or sequence from sip to sip.

A unique, medium-bodied, dark beer with a rum/malt/caramel/dark fruit flavor that goes down amicably. An interesting strong ale that pleases the taste buds and makes itself easy to wash down.

Sampled at Wolfbrau. It poured a cloudy brown with a beige head. The aroma was of spicy yeast, caramel malts, a little sweetness with light fruits and a good amount of hops. The taste was similar, with lots of yeast and malts. A good beer.

Clear amber to red beer, irregular yellowish head, bit stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: very soapy, floral, yeast, ripe fruits, apples, a bit off. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bit sourish, ripe to overripe fruits, pretty off, bit sweet, honey, bitter hops. Aftertaste: floral, yeast, ripe to overripe fruits, bit sugary. Probably too old?

Batch #3 poured into a tullip glass. Pours a hazy amber color with a near white head that doesn’t last too long. It is a nice strong ester spicey note with additional notes of honey, caramel and hops. Flavor is initially sweet malt with a hint of bitterness. There are also notes of hops and and finishes with a sweet and cleanly. Mouthfeel is full overall with decent carbonation. Overall a solid beer.
