Commercial Description:
Salvation. The name of two intricate Belgian-style ales created by us, Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing and Adam Avery of Avery Brewing. After becoming friends a few years ago, we realized that we both had a Salvation in our line-ups. Was it going to be a problem? Should one of us relinquish the rights? "Hell no!" we said. In fact, it was quickly decided that we should blend the brews to catch the best qualities of each and create an even more complex libation. In April 2004, in top-secret meeting at Russian River Brewing (well actually it was packed in the pub, and many were looking over our shoulders wondering what the hell was going on), we came up with the perfect blend of the two Salvations. Natalie, Vinnie’s much more significant other, exclaimed, "We should call this Collaboration, not Litigation Ale!" "Perfect!" we shouted. We celebrated deep into the night, (or is it morning?). Fast forward to November 14, 2006. After talking about it for over 2 years we finally decided to pull the trigger and Vinnie flew out to Avery to brew his Salvation exactly as he does in his brewery. This was blended with Avery’s Salvation December 11th, 2006. We hope you enjoy it as much we enjoyed brewing and blending it.

On draft At Mellow Mushroom WestChase.

The beer was far too cold when served… I had to let the creature warm a bit before diving in. After a good 10 min of warming, the beer found its stride.
The body is a roasty shade of orange; the head is tall and prominent. A wonderful aroma of toffee, red apples, pears, brown sugar, a touch of banana, and cashew nuts are my first impression. From the first sip on, all I could think was a fine cigar tobacco spiciness, it was very forward to me. That nutty, lightly chocolaty, earthy spicyness I get from a good medium bodied stogy. The palate is luxurious and soft, a bit chewy and intoxicatingly drinkable. This is a wonderful treat… Well done with the Collaboration!

22 oz. bomber courtesy of DoBoy-Thanks Ed. Deep coppery brown clear body under a medium off white delicate head that subsides to a thin veil of fine bubbles. Fruity and spicy, the aroma leans heavily toward sweet malty flavors with a follow up by somepiney hop notes. Rich and smooth mouthfeel supported by a medium body and fine light effervescence. Satisfying caramel sweetness continues on inot the finish, with a touch of spicy bitterness coming in quite late. Very nice in all respects.

Pours a hazy burnt orange with a creamy, off-white head and fine, suspended sediment. The nose is of sweet, fruity Belgian yeast and accompanying notes of dehydrated fruit and candy sugar. Medium-bodied and grainy with a lightly funky, dry finish. Sweet, fruity, woody, lightly funky and dry with a touch of alcohol at the end. It possesses a really subtle/muted brett quality that I’ve never really encountered in another beer. It’s certainly playing a supporting role versus the dominant role it plays in so many other beers. This is a decent enough brew, but I can’t say that I am entirely impressed with how this blend came together. Now I’ll have to try both of the Salvations to see if the parts are better than the sum.

Thick brown pour with brown head. Nose sweet with fruit. Flavor is somewhat sweet with a little fruit and malt. Very smooth texture and was suprised by the alcohol. It is well hidden with the creamy texture. Nice clean finish.

I thought this was a decent beer, not really anything super special, a lot more hype than anything else. Having tried both beers separately, before trying them blended together. There is a very yeasty nose, with hints of coriander, and black tea. A very enjoyable malt background, with some overwhelming spiciness, slightly eschewed by the candy sugar sweetness. Slightly more reminiscent of the Avery model than the Russian River in my opinion.

Bottle from Sam’s, 2008 edition. Pour is deep reddish brown with one finger off white head. Cloudy. Nose of honey, a touch of apple and cherry, some yeast and sweetness. Taste is contrary, taste kinda like grass and iced tea, a bit grainy and alcoholic. Fizzy on the palate. Smelled a lot better than it tastes, though nothing too awful. Meh.
