Ofortuna (285), Grafton, Wisconsin, USA Apr 6, 2008 22oz bomber courtesy of Odeed. Pours a frothy, quickly dissipating head of a dark caramel colour. Odd, but intriguing smell. I get both sides of the beer here with some vinous and biscuit notes being most present. Some nice candied fruits, fruity esters and toffee as well. Flavour is really one-sided towards the Avery version and I would have liked to see more of Vinnie’s creation in this one. Decent finish that left a nice mouth-coating feel on the palate. Back-end was dry and a slight warming element made itself known well after the initial sip. In my opinion, one of Avery’s better offerings and a good effort overall.
emerica56 (435), Bristol, Rhode Island, USA Jul 20, 2008 Pours a cloudy amber color with a thin off white head and leaves some laceing along the sides of the glass. The nose is very spicy with a semi sweet finish. As you take sip it is very bready with sweet tartness that sticks on your palate nicely and leaves a lasting impression. I personally enjoy the spice you can really taste it on the tip of your tounge. The finish is sweet and has a nice hop bitterness that rounds out the beer making it very refreshing. Drink4Satan (447), Bristol, Rhode Island, USA Jul 20, 2008 Pours a murky orange-hued brown colour with a dense cream coloured head that reatains very and has bubble sizes from fine to large. The nose is ripe with clove/banana, brown sugar, estery apple notes, caramel, possibly candi sugar, spicy yeast and aromatic Belgian malts. The flavour is very malty and sweet, with a strong banana/clove presence, peppery spice, alcohol, bready malts, cocoa and aromatic low-alpha hops. The palate is silken and almost devoid of carbonation, which actually works nicely with this beer. there is a mild cider-like flavour beneath this already complex brew. It leaves a nice warming of the chest and the palate duration is rather long. gsmitty80 (499), Washington DC, USA Jul 20, 2008 Another impressive high gravity beer from Avery. This is a typical belgian style ale but it was very smooth and didnt have much of a kick you in the face alcohol feel like soo many other belgians, great beer. grandet (300), Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 16, 2008 Bottle.Dark amber pour with a small tan head that didnt last long. Aroma is of sweet dates and some sweet fruit. Spicy aroma as well. Pretty good mouthfeel on this one. Nice malty sweetness with a nice warming aftertaste. Very sweet and enjoyable. boto (1199), Granby, Connecticut, USA Jul 12, 2008 22oz. bomber: This one pours a darker orangish/amber color. There was a full tan head on it when first poured, but it drops off to a thin ring rather quickly. The aroma was a bit lighter than I would have expected for a beer of this style. Still, it was good, with notes of caramel, breadiness, yeast and spices. The taste is good. The sweetness is more subdued than I would normally expect with a brew of this type. Caramel and fruit tastes, but they are subdued. Nothing really pops out, just a good blend. A bit of dryness to the finish. Nice.
