Commercial Description:
This beautiful, deep russet brew has the sweet and somewhat nutty character of Adam Avery's late (1992-2002) Chocolate Lab, for which it is named. Crystal and chocolate malts give this beer a brown sugar maltiness with hints of vanilla and nuts, while subtle hopping gives it an overall drinkability that's second to none, just like Ellie!

14 month old bottle. Dark brown with minimal head. Great aroma for the style; rich malt with a hint of alcohol. Kind of smokey aggressive malt flavour. Thin body. Dry malt. Short sweet finish.

(Bottled) Dark amber color with a smallish, but lasting, lacy head. Slightly vinous berry aroma with salty-licoricey maltiness. Quite licoricey, smooth-malty, slightly roasty flavor with some dried fruit and sourness. Medium-bodied palate with pretty high carbonation. Quite nice for a brown ale, but not much else. More malty and dark than expected.

On tap at speakeasy. Poured a dark copper brown with a small tannish head. Aroma was surprisngly hoppy with notes of mild chcolate, vanilla, and roasted malt. Flavor a carbon copy of aroma but with less depth. A pretty good brown.

Bottle. Pours a dark ruby-brown with lots of bubbles and an average size lasting tan head. Mild aroma of nuts, caramel malt, light chocolate, a faint sourness and hops. Flavour’s malty with some nuts, a hint of chocolate and a light bitter finish. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel. It’s good enough but I found it a bit boring, it doesn’t have much character and there are much better Brown Ales out there.

The color was mahogany. The head was light brown, extremely creamy and fluffy. The aroma was slightly sour maybe a little bit of spice, nothing outstanding. The flavor was a little bitter, little sour malt. The flavor was definitely lacking. The palate was thin, but there was a good amount of carbonation. The finish was clean. Really, the most impressive attribute of this beer was its head. This is a tolerable brown ale but I’ve definitely had better.

I wanted so much to like this beer, being an Avery and my taste for Brown’s but it was an utter disappointment. The pour looked thin, granted it had some nice red hues, but it was in the end a thin brown. The head was nice, profuse, creamy, light tan. The aroma is lacking in all respects, it has a sour/cornish malt smell, and maybe some hop. Not at all pungent/good.The flavor is thin, there is some bitter/flavor (although barely distinct), and also the sour/cornish malt taste carries over. The palate is thin and watery, as is the finish. Overall completely lacks complexity and defining character. Not a bad session beer but not something I would buy again or drink to enjoy.

It’s a dark brown beer, with a nice head. Both aroma and flavour is nice with notes of roasted malt, caramel and toffee. It’s a nice Brown ale, but IMO it might have a bit more power.

Bottle. Brown colour, average head. Nice caramel aroma with toasted malts and hops. Flavour is smooth, caramel, little biiter chocolate, nice toasty maltiness. Great brew.
