This beautiful, deep russet brew has the sweet and somewhat nutty character of Adam Avery's late (1992-2002) Chocolate Lab, for which it is named. Crystal and chocolate malts give this beer a brown sugar maltiness with hints of vanilla and nuts, while subtle hopping gives it an overall drinkability that's second to none, just like Ellie!

A canonical brown. Looks fantastic. Aroma is nutty, hint of roast, and some good malt. Flavor is just excellent, nice malt with some good hop hints. Finish is clean and good. You can’t go wrong with this brown. Avery’s kinda known for their huge beers, but this is one of their best, methinks.

Can. Pours clear dark amber with thin off white head. Nose and taste are caramel and toffee. Standard brown ale. Refreshing.

I poured it from the bottle into a pint glass. It pours a nice reddish brown color with a big tan head and lacing. The aroma is roasty malt and chocolate. The taste is very sweet with chocolate, caramel, and a very slight roasty bitterness. Itís pretty creamy. This bordered on too sweet. It was still decent though.

Can, thanks sevenhokie! Milk chocolate aroma with notes of caramel and nuts. Pours dark brown with a half a finger of light brown head with good retention but little lacing. Starts with sweet milk chocolate and bit of caramel. Finishes smooth with caramel and brown sugar sweetness. Solid brown!

Have had his many times, but somehow never rated it. Draft pour pint at Frankies. Pours dark brown with a tan swirl head. Small roast aroma. Flavor is milk chocolate, roasted malt, and sweet caramel. Pretty good brown here.

Aroma of chocolate and roasted nuts. Deep brown color with a tan head that fades quickly. Bittersweet up front. Chocolate with some almond flavor, then an off sweetness. Bitterness lingers a bit on the finish. Off balance. Slightly watery mouth feel. Average. Wondering if a bad bottle...may try again to verify

12-oz can. Pours a murky dark brown, almost mahogany, with a dense and creamy tan head. Nice sweet nose, showing molasses and caramel and nice leafy herbal hops. Creamy medium body with soft carb. Molasses, caramel, and leafy herbal hop notes on the mid palate, soft finish. This is another one of those reviews that will tell you that this is a good beer, made well, but suffers from being an example of an ordinary, very subdued style that isnít very enticing very often. Still, if youíre in the mood for a maltier beer thatís repeatable, and you can get your hands on a fresh one of these, itís a winning choice.

Can from Mitsuya. Drank straight from the can. Brown sugar, caramel with a light hint of hazelnut. Taste is malt forward with leaning pretty strongly on the sweet side for the style. Cola-like mouthfeel with average carbonation. Quite sweet actually.

Pre-pour thoughts. So, brown ales are not among my favorite styles. I saw this bottle, and I loved the label. I totally love the fact that "Ellie" was honored with her own beer. I also chuckled at the thought that this was "Lab Tested." Is that in a lab? Or by a lab? Either way, Iíd like to know the results of that test. I know, I know...still makes me chuckle.

Pours a dark cola brown. I can almost see through it, About one finger beige head. Quite nice lacing on the glass.

Aroma is some vanilla, not real strong. I smell brown sugar, or perhaps more so the molasses. Itís malty, and slightly chocolatey.

Taste is quite malty. Thereís also a good bit of nuts of some type. Thereís some chocolate, but not a lot. At the end, I taste the molasses. The molasses leaves a slight bitterness on the tongue.

Mouthfeel is medium, yet heavy. Itís easy drinking. Itís sweet, itís bitter, then sweet, then bitter. Itís a tongue twister.

Overall, itís pretty good. Itís a decent brown, maybe even a good brown. I think I could have this again. I would take this over Newcastle. However, I would have trouble deciding between this or a new one. Hey, if nothing else, try it and think about your own "Ellie" while you drink it.

Hey, I wonder how beer labels with cats would work?
