Commercial Description:
15 years of brewing! You know what’s been the best part lately? Tons of experimentation! For the last couple of years, we’ve been working with several strains of brettanomyces (wild yeast). We found one and deemed it the best for it’s tart flavor and funky, fruity aroma. Adding black mission figs for a subtle jammy aspect, hibiscus flowers for an herbal bouquet and hazy sunset hue, and white pepper for a bit of spicy twang, we’ve created FIFTEEN - a unique drinking experience inspired by the wild farmhouse ales of Belgium. Though immensely complex today, more flavor will emerge with time, so throw a few bottles in your cellar for future celebrations. Thanks to all of you who have made our 15-year ride possible! Peace to all and follow your dreams! Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, malted wheat, hops, black mission figs, hibiscus flowers, white pepper, and a very unique strain of brettanomyces yeast.

After about a year away, I probably shouldn’t return to ratebeer on a sour note, but the Avery Fifteen was hands down the most disappointing Avery brew I’ve ever drunk. Of course, I most likely had insanely high standards for the Fifteen, considering that the Fourteen is one of my all-time faves. This anniversary ale looked decent enough, and the aroma wasn’t necessarily offensive. However, I remember the Fourteen being both inventive and tasty, but whatever experimentation went on with the Fifteen amouted to a rotten mess in comparison.

Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Murky yellow color. Sweet, perfumed, clovey, horsey and barnyardy aroma. Sweet flavor with strong horsey wild yeastiness, tropical fruits like mango and apricot as well as pepper and clove. I like brettanomyces beers but this is too horsey.

Light amber in color with a decent sized white head. Aroma is slightly sour with some earth, spices and herbs. Flavor is earthy and spicy with a dry palate.

This one is really maturing nicely. Hazy golden amber body supports a small bonewhite head that has some sheet lacing. Aroma has figs and funk, with some earthy yeast. Spritzy carbonation on a light medium body. Taste has a nice funk. Brett notes are merging nicely. Wet gravel, dry, chewing on twigs. Barnyard and earthy notes abound. Year old dried figs are funky sweet, yet dry. Highly drinkable. Avery has my vote for the best anniversary ales.

Poured into my tulip glass with a very pleasant visual appeal -- golden orange, wonderfully active and topped with a nice mushy, bubbly head. The aroma is starkly spicy, musty and warm. Despite the somewhat intimidating aroma, this drinks relatively easy, albeit with a "funky and fruity" tilt (sure, I’ll plagiarize their own description since it’s spot on). (#3495, 2/13/2009)

Pour: Bomber to La Chouffe goblet. Bright, lively gold color with a fluffy white head. Some wet lacing. Nose: Enormous bretty funkstravaganza. The brett takes this one in a phenolic direction with sweet bandaid notes. There’s also some green apple tartness and some sweeter citric fruit. Mouth: The fruit from the aroma is limited in the flavor, which is unfortunate because that leaves a mouthful of rubber and bandaids. Leathery, peppery, plasticky. I get a whisper of the hibiscus but no figs. High carbonation limits the drinkability, but the flavor limits it more.

(on bottle) Hazy, light orange, small, white head. Sour, fresh bret sent. Foamy mouth, that gets dry and cardboardish. Rotten taste, metallic and flat. The carbonation is way off, considering the fatness and tight sugars. No trace of figs or pepper. Odd harsh and ironish finish.

Bottled@Pikkulintu, Helsinki. Hazy yellowish colour, small white head. Aroma is fruits, some grass and mild notes of gluelike alcohol. Flavour is fruity hops, some earth and mild notes of alcohol and vegetables. Aftertaste has also some slight herbal notes.
