merlin48 (509), New Tazewell, Tennessee, USA Feb 15, 2009 This one is really maturing nicely. Hazy golden amber body supports a small bonewhite head that has some sheet lacing. Aroma has figs and funk, with some earthy yeast. Spritzy carbonation on a light medium body. Taste has a nice funk. Brett notes are merging nicely. Wet gravel, dry, chewing on twigs. Barnyard and earthy notes abound. Year old dried figs are funky sweet, yet dry. Highly drinkable. Avery has my vote for the best anniversary ales. Braudog (3733), Dayton, Ohio, USA Feb 13, 2009 Poured into my tulip glass with a very pleasant visual appeal -- golden orange, wonderfully active and topped with a nice mushy, bubbly head. The aroma is starkly spicy, musty and warm. Despite the somewhat intimidating aroma, this drinks relatively easy, albeit with a "funky and fruity" tilt (sure, I’ll plagiarize their own description since it’s spot on). (#3495, 2/13/2009) illidurit (851), Santa Cruz, California, USA Feb 12, 2009 Pour: Bomber to La Chouffe goblet. Bright, lively gold color with a fluffy white head. Some wet lacing.
Nose: Enormous bretty funkstravaganza. The brett takes this one in a phenolic direction with sweet bandaid notes. There’s also some green apple tartness and some sweeter citric fruit.
Mouth: The fruit from the aroma is limited in the flavor, which is unfortunate because that leaves a mouthful of rubber and bandaids. Leathery, peppery, plasticky. I get a whisper of the hibiscus but no figs. High carbonation limits the drinkability, but the flavor limits it more. JensenTaster (1585), Denmark Feb 4, 2009 (on bottle) Hazy, light orange, small, white head. Sour, fresh bret sent. Foamy mouth, that gets dry and cardboardish. Rotten taste, metallic and flat. The carbonation is way off, considering the fatness and tight sugars. No trace of figs or pepper. Odd harsh and ironish finish. oh6gdx (8802), Vasa, Finland Feb 3, 2009 Bottled@Pikkulintu, Helsinki. Hazy yellowish colour, small white head. Aroma is fruits, some grass and mild notes of gluelike alcohol. Flavour is fruity hops, some earth and mild notes of alcohol and vegetables. Aftertaste has also some slight herbal notes. mspindler (301), Alta Loma, California, USA Feb 1, 2009 Bottle shared with friends at Obriens. Pours a clear golden with a small white head. Aroma like a petting zoo. Super funky barnyard, malty and spicy. Flavor is like eating old vegetable straight out of the earth then sucking on a musty old wet horseblanket to wash it down. I know the funky barnyard stuff is usually desired in this style, but in this case it just feels overwhelming. Overall somewhat disappointing. Medium bodied, medium carb. Soft sour aroma - quite like orval. Now I know it’s there, I can also detect a touch of the white pepper in the aroma too. Taste follows the orval theme, but with more peppery hops. Palate is crisp and biting, those hops are excellent. It’s uplifting with every sip. There’s clove in the finish, rather strangely. Lumpy (1802), Carrollton, Texas, USA Jan 31, 2009 Bottle. Body-Hazy honey, thick ring of bubbles, thin film of bubbles. Nose-light cherry funk, very light barnyard, very restrained fun. Decent nose. Taste-chlorine, pool water, light white grapes, grass (Marcus described it perfectly-tastes like chewing on a Cat’s Tail), light flower petals, tea. Overall the nose is nice, but the taste is way too grapey and floral, and reminds me of pool water.
