COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
15 years of brewing! You know what’s been the best part lately? Tons of experimentation! For the last couple of years, we’ve been working with several strains of brettanomyces (wild yeast). We found one and deemed it the best for it’s tart flavor and funky, fruity aroma. Adding black mission figs for a subtle jammy aspect, hibiscus flowers for an herbal bouquet and hazy sunset hue, and white pepper for a bit of spicy twang, we’ve created FIFTEEN - a unique drinking experience inspired by the wild farmhouse ales of Belgium. Though immensely complex today, more flavor will emerge with time, so throw a few bottles in your cellar for future celebrations. Thanks to all of you who have made our 15-year ride possible! Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, malted wheat, hops, black mission figs, hibiscus flowers, white pepper, and a very unique strain of brettanomyces yeast.

Butters (2841) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - MAR 1, 2009
UPDATED: JAN 28, 2012 Bottle at the Fourth Butters’ Cellar Clearance Event. Clear golden yellow pour with white head. Nose of medicinal melon fruit. Flavor is bandaid, anitsceptic ointment, with some fruity flavor and alcohol. This beer is pretty damn bad. Rerate at the Richmond 17th Gathering. Much less offensive this time around. Still not great. Very floral with a good deal of brett flavor.

Barrios (1243) - Nashville, Tennessee, USA - MAR 1, 2009
22 oz bottle at Butters’ 4th Cellar Reduction. Pours a fading with light lace white head with a golden body. Smells of sour urinal cake. Taste is astringent and sharp, like cough syrup.

SamGamgee (2451) - down the whirlpool, California, USA - MAR 1, 2009
22oz bottle. Gold color with a lasting white head. The aroma is lightly funky and cheesy with dusty yeast, grapes and fruity white wine. The flavor is pretty clean and fruity, with fig, flowers and just a touch of malt. Finishes dry, lightly alcoholic, and a little spicy. Pretty enjoyable, but I wish there had been some noticeable acidity to complement the flavors.

Bottle. Hazy golden body, with a medium white head. Aroma is sour, citrus, friut, dust, yeast. Flavor is fruit, yeast, sour, citrus, spices. I will absoulutely buy this beer again.

After about a year away, I probably shouldn’t return to ratebeer on a sour note, but the Avery Fifteen was hands down the most disappointing Avery brew I’ve ever drunk. Of course, I most likely had insanely high standards for the Fifteen, considering that the Fourteen is one of my all-time faves. This anniversary ale looked decent enough, and the aroma wasn’t necessarily offensive. However, I remember the Fourteen being both inventive and tasty, but whatever experimentation went on with the Fifteen amouted to a rotten mess in comparison.

Miksu (3887) - Jyväskylä, FINLAND - FEB 21, 2009
Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Murky yellow color. Sweet, perfumed, clovey, horsey and barnyardy aroma. Sweet flavor with strong horsey wild yeastiness, tropical fruits like mango and apricot as well as pepper and clove. I like brettanomyces beers but this is too horsey.

Light amber in color with a decent sized white head. Aroma is slightly sour with some earth, spices and herbs. Flavor is earthy and spicy with a dry palate.

This one is really maturing nicely. Hazy golden amber body supports a small bonewhite head that has some sheet lacing. Aroma has figs and funk, with some earthy yeast. Spritzy carbonation on a light medium body. Taste has a nice funk. Brett notes are merging nicely. Wet gravel, dry, chewing on twigs. Barnyard and earthy notes abound. Year old dried figs are funky sweet, yet dry. Highly drinkable. Avery has my vote for the best anniversary ales.
