Commercial Description:
15 years of brewing! You know what’s been the best part lately? Tons of experimentation! For the last couple of years, we’ve been working with several strains of brettanomyces (wild yeast). We found one and deemed it the best for it’s tart flavor and funky, fruity aroma. Adding black mission figs for a subtle jammy aspect, hibiscus flowers for an herbal bouquet and hazy sunset hue, and white pepper for a bit of spicy twang, we’ve created FIFTEEN - a unique drinking experience inspired by the wild farmhouse ales of Belgium. Though immensely complex today, more flavor will emerge with time, so throw a few bottles in your cellar for future celebrations. Thanks to all of you who have made our 15-year ride possible! Peace to all and follow your dreams! Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, malted wheat, hops, black mission figs, hibiscus flowers, white pepper, and a very unique strain of brettanomyces yeast.

22oz bomber, no date from Brennan’s in Madison. Nice copy of the Bruegel label--or is it some famous painting?Fermented with 100% Brett? Huzzah!--hopefully. Clear medium golden with a 11/2 finger off-white head, good retention. Aroma has the undeniable aroma of brett--dry, lemony, leathery, and slightly buttery--with some light cherry cough syrup in the back-end. A little peach is present as well--smells pretty clean, actually. Flavor isn’t quite as nice, with straight alcohol and grain coming forth. I could pick up on only a hint of floral notes (hibiscus, perhaps?) with the white pepper coming forth towards the finish. Plenty of cough syrup notes as well. Dry finish, bitterness peaking around a 2-3 and sourness at a 2. Moderate carbonation with a medium body. Started out promising, but fell flat. I don’t care what Andy says, he’s wrong and a jerk.

Bottle 650ml
Appearance: Murky amber gold ale with bright medium top.
Nose: Sour farm brew with medicinal elements and citric orange like substratum. Funky organic feel is unavoidable.
Flavor/Palate : Medium bodied , soft in character. Less funky than aroma. slight spice with rose feel at finish. Interesting. Became more complex at finish. Slight fruity hints of red apple.

bottle - Pours deep golden with a two finger head. It has a wonderfully rich, fruity, funky aroma that I started smelling as soon as I opened the bottle. Unfortunately while not bad, the flavor doesn’t live up to the aroma. The fruitiness is very mild and I didn’t think there was enough malt body in this one. There is of course plenty of funky Brett. There are some herbal notes but nothing too interesting. It’s medium bodied and the finish is bone dry. Avery does a lot of experimenting and kudos to them for that.

Appearance: Pours a clear, golden-orange body with an inch of frothy, white foam. Smell: Aroma of dried flower petals, leather, muscadines, strawberry jelly, spice-covered honeydew melons and, yes, even a handful of band aids. Taste: Belgian pils malt, lightly sweet. Melange of light fruit flavors. Splash of sauvignon blanc. Taste of antique leather in need of a long overdue cleaning. Herbal, mentholesque, Ricola-like flavor builds throughout. Hints of antiseptic-coated band aids. Spicy, citrusy hops with a decent bitterness that pairs with the Ricola and peppery hints. Pinch of white pepper (honest, I just read this on the bottle in between watching Back to the Future III. I’m not a huge fan of white pepper, particularly when used in potato dishes or soups). Finishes with a light funky tartness. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: An admirable attempt at using Brett, but it didn’t do it for me, especially with all those band aids in there. It certainly was no Fourteen (or Thirteen or Twelve).

Pours a clear golden, lager like. Not much head, some wispy white on the edges. Nose- brett, spice, touch of citrus. Taste- serious barnyard. Also has white grape skin mouthfeel - kind of thick syrup. dry spice and pepper on the finish. Very unique especially on the finish- gym sock type funk along with alcohol heat. Booze is more present than necessary taking away from the finish. Looking forward to revisiting this beer in a year or so.

Bottle at home - shared with Mette-Speedway-Nielsen. Cloudy orange - white edges. Brett - lots of brett. Honey, peppery, wheaty, grape, spicy, dryness, light sweetness, barnyard, horsey. Nice - but a bit weak.....

Tap @ Blind Tiger. Pours a hazy amber-gold color with a lacy off-white head. Aroma is largely floral hops with dark fruit, pepper, lighter fruit (peach), and spice detectable as well. Taste is the same, though it remains tart and rather flat throughout. The finish is dry and bitter....I’d call this one Just OK.
