Commercial Description:
15 years of brewing! You know what’s been the best part lately? Tons of experimentation! For the last couple of years, we’ve been working with several strains of brettanomyces (wild yeast). We found one and deemed it the best for it’s tart flavor and funky, fruity aroma. Adding black mission figs for a subtle jammy aspect, hibiscus flowers for an herbal bouquet and hazy sunset hue, and white pepper for a bit of spicy twang, we’ve created FIFTEEN - a unique drinking experience inspired by the wild farmhouse ales of Belgium. Though immensely complex today, more flavor will emerge with time, so throw a few bottles in your cellar for future celebrations. Thanks to all of you who have made our 15-year ride possible! Peace to all and follow your dreams! Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, malted wheat, hops, black mission figs, hibiscus flowers, white pepper, and a very unique strain of brettanomyces yeast.

22oz bottle. Slightly orange golden color with a small white head. Twinge of acetic tartness in the aroma, with an earthy sweetness and candied fruit. Slight tartness, heavy phenolic plasticy component. Slight fruitiness emerges. Grassy, herbal peppery tones in the finish, with heavy residual phenolics. Mouthfeel is medium, somewhat dry.

Pours a slightly cloudy yellow gold with a nominal white head that reduces quickly to just coating the surface. Has the aroma of sour sweatsocks and rotting wet grass. On the other hand, the taste is smooth, malty and fruity (must be the figs). Thank goodness the taste is better than the smell. Hold your breath as you quaff. Not bad, but too odd to try again.

22oz bottle. Pours a hazy golden brown with a big quickly dissipating fizzy head. Nose is pretty good with a nice sour funky and light fruitiness. There is a off note in there that takes it down a bit. The flavor is somewhat of a let down. Hay dominates with a lot of big grassy notes up front a light sour funkiness with some citrus notes and then a slightly medicinal aftertaste. I think they were trying for something along the lines of Fantome but failed pretty miserably. Points for trying but this is not very good.

22oz bottle from BevMo Mission Valley. I’m not quite sure where to start with this beer. Pours a mostly clear golden yellow with a small and fizzy off white head. Nose of sour and funk. Brew starts off like a sour ale then the finish is reminiscent of a lager, very strange. I’ll give them points for the weird factor.

Bottle. Pours cloudy yellow-orange with a very small white head. Has a faint citrus and stale earthy aroma. The flavor has an initial unpleasantness - almost a sour punch that is redeemed in part by a sweet, tart finish that lingers. An interesting beer, but not one I’ll be going back to.

Pours murky yellow with a thin, fizzy white head. Aroma is very pleasant, possibly the only good thing about this beer. Figs, apples, and the advertised funky yeast reminiscent of a Flemish. The taste is brutal. Up front is nice: fig, hops, and hibiscus flavors. Then the wretched wild yeast takes over. Sour is not the word for it. It tastes like the tangiest pink taco you could imagine with a bile back. I gave this one a chance, making it thorugh 2/3 of a bomber until I cried "no mas." The only reason this rating didn’t dip below 2 is because I like Avery and applaud their willingness to take a chance. However, you could not force me to drink this again. You can ban me for life from RateBeer for this rating, I will stand by it until I die.

On tap at the Linkery. Very cloudy dark yellow with a fizzy white head. Sweet aroma. Not as sour as I was expecting. The fig taste comes through nicely, only a hint of nectar flavor otherwise the hibiscus isn’t really noticeable. The pepper taste comes through in the finish. Pretty good overall.
