Commercial Description:
15 years of brewing! You know what's been the best part lately? Tons of experimentation! For the last couple of years, we've been working with several strains of brettanomyces (wild yeast). We found one and deemed it the best for it's tart flavor and funky, fruity aroma. Adding black mission figs for a subtle jammy aspect, hibiscus flowers for an herbal bouquet and hazy sunset hue, and white pepper for a bit of spicy twang, we've created FIFTEEN - a unique drinking experience inspired by the wild farmhouse ales of Belgium. Though immensely complex today, more flavor will emerge with time, so throw a few bottles in your cellar for future celebrations. Thanks to all of you who have made our 15-year ride possible! Peace to all and follow your dreams! Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, malted wheat, hops, black mission figs, hibiscus flowers, white pepper, and a very unique strain of brettanomyces yeast.

Nice orange haze with a sudsy head. Funky-monkey nose was inviting. Soft, light and fluffy texture. Malts were light and toasty; seemed to have a rye-like quality. Faint sweetness (sweet pineapple and vanilla). Bright and very spicy, peppery, perfumey and flowery. Just a pinch of sourness in the background; I kind of yearned for more. Yeast flavors and aromas were very pleasant, somewhat farmy. Fun beer!

22 oz. bottle from Plaza Liquors - Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a one finger thick white head. Very little lacing. Aroma is toasted malt, esters, and spice. Flavor is esters, yeast, and spice. Medium body. A pretty good beer.

On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Its nice to see some diversity in Avery’s anniversary lineup by including brett in this year’s brew. Overall, the beer presents itself impressively in the aroma, but in its entirety lacks the complexity and depth of bigger sour ales. Biscuit and wet hay aroma with faint tones of cellar and damp earth. Smells pretty good. The flavor leans thin with an average amount of tartness and a slightly grainy feel to the malt base. The wild bugs are barely there in the finish. Easy to drink, but the lackluster flavor profile doesn’t give it points here. I thought after collaborating with Tomme for Proximus, this would have turned out better.

Slightly cloudy straw color with a thin ring of white head at glass edge. Aroma has a slightly acidic funk component and a fruitiness to it. The taste is odd in that there is no funk or tartness present, just a basic Belgian strong base and not much else.

My, this certainly is a divisive beer. The description on the bottle did have me scared, and then the pour was much lighter (golden orange) and more transparent than expected, so combined with the low rating, I was not expecting much. But then I tried it. Lots of funky brett on the nose: lemon, rotting granny smith apples, earth, diapers. Makes me want to drink it, diapers and all. Taste doesn’t follow through as much as expected (tastes as grainy as yeasty), but perhaps bottle age will improve it a bit. A noble effort from Avery; wish more brewers would experiment with brett. If you like funky beers, this is worth trying, though you may want to age a bit first.

22oz bomber-A golden body with a small tight head and an aroma of belgian yeast, fruit, and spices Taste of yeast, sourness, and on the back end a little funk. Not the best anniversary ale from Avery. In fact probably their worse.
