3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 TopherDrinks (96) - Poughkeepsie, New York, USA - DEC 27, 2007
Bottle. Pours near black with reddish highlights. Great light tan head which leaves its mark down the glass. Malty nose with a fruity hopped edge. Taste is pretty similar with a citrusy hop burn instead of the hop flavor that is expressed in the nose. Oranges, some roasted nuts, and molasses malts. Boozy and dry finish. Good representation of an American Strong Ale, yet nothing too eccentric or over the top.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 HopBackDoc (470) - Hatboro, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 26, 2007
Pours a dark brown, some ruby highlights, with a firm tan head. Aroma is roasted malts, dried fruits, plums, and mild spices. The flavor was big and complex. Lots of malt, plums, raisins, molasses and a great dry, citrus hop finish. This beer is one to be sipped and appreciated. Avery has outdone themselves.
4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 Braudog (4473) - Hampton, Virginia, USA - DEC 16, 2007
Bottle: What a beautiful pour ... deep and dark with a rigid guard of bubbly top foam. The aroma is rich a dry. The drink is ambrosia ... rich, dark fruits like raisin, plum and full blood oranges, along with a richly roasted malt, all boiled together. Has Avery ever gone wrong? Me thinks not. Yet another homerun from one of the country’s greatest brewers. (#3255, 12/16/2007)

Bomber from Halftime. Huge whiff of malt as bottle is opened and poured. Thick. Color is very dark brown almost black. Smells great. Monster big beer, malty yet not nearly as sweet as expected. Hoppy ending but not an IPA. Really well balanced and well done. I wish I bought two!
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Edmoe (226) - Orlando, Florida, USA - DEC 11, 2007
Black with thick, rocky, dark tan head. Good lacing. Aroma is nice. I could smell it as I poured it. Chocolate. Malt w/ some roastiness and a slight sweetness. Cookies. Flavor is not as sweet as expected. Mostly roasted malt. Full bodied. A slight lingering bitterness that distracts a little.

Excellent Excellent Excellent . This is fine beer that has a nice hoppy alternative to regular beers. I won at pool while drinking this...is that enough for a recommendation?
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 petermadsen (390) - Vesterbronxxx, DENMARK - DEC 8, 2007
A brown ale with a dense beige head. Aroma is filled with sweet malt, some toasted notes and a nice hop presence. The flavour is complex and nice with loads of malt, sweet molases, wonderfully balanced hops of the amarican style. Like the bottle says, its hard to define the style but a very rewarding beer to drink!
4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 ElGaucho (1816) - Minnetonka, Minnesota, USA - DEC 7, 2007
Bottle. When I was at the store, I wasn’t sure if I had rated this one yet; the label is similar to the one for Thirteen and I had kind of lost track of what number anniversary they were on. Fresh, fruity hop aroma; very nice. Opaque body with a very large tan head. Weaves a tapestry of lace. My palate really had to adjust to this brew. The first sip made me wince, but it settles into a pretty good brew. There’s a malt and hop combination that aren’t perfectly compatible. However, it is unique, and when you’ve rated 1,600 beers, finding something unique can be a challenge. I really do like this beer; it challenges the status quo. The label speaks to "a very distinct yeast strain". Perhaps that is what makes this brew so different. Kudos to Adam Avery for his contributions to the craft beer movement.
