UPDATED: JUL 23, 2007 Pours a dark ruby brown with a tan head. Strong aroma of extremely spicy hop character. Very peppery, some pine, ginger, and a molasses malt behind that. The flavor is equally interesting and confounding in its contrast of chocolate and maple syrup verses a spicy piny hop flavor that tastes as if the hops were boiled with some blackening seasoning first. Finishes with a hoppy tang, and still more spiciness but the malt flavors linger equally. Thick and creamy mouthfeel. I gotta say, this beer is confusing to me. I tried a sample of this at the brewery, and I couldn’t believe that extra spices weren’t added. I guess the dry-hopping is just that strong? It’s good enough that I’m gonna try it a few more times. Perhaps given time, the malt and hop flavors won’ taste so unrelated.
Upon having a much larger glass than just a sample size, I find the malt flavor much more appealing in its chocolate, earthy and slightly peanutty flavors. The super-spicy hop character that I experienced before (especially on tap, wow) becomes a team player overtime with the chocolate and molasses. The heat is quite high, but tolerable. I wish the texture had even more creaminess than what is already there. Oh well. Very interesting stuff though, worth investigating multiple times.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 MoDog (927) - Griffith, Indiana, USA - FEB 27, 2008
Poured from a 22oz bomber and served in a snifter. This beer poured a dark, ruby-tinged brown with a thick, creamy head of dark tan foam. Good retention throughout the glass, leaving some heavy lacing behind. The aroma of the beer was made up of huge caramel and toasted malts, orange, grapefruit, brown sugar, and molasses. The flavor included very sweet and syrupy molasses, brown sugar, grapefruit rind, and mild orange zest. A fairly strong note of chocolate also became increasingly noticable as the beer warmed. The mouthfeel was full-bodied and slightly sticky with light carbonation. The combonation of the sweetness and the hop bitterness actually worked quite well together. Good, but not overly exciting.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Hangover (926) - Atlanta, USA - JUL 23, 2007
Dark brown, near black pour with a thick and volumnious tan head. Huge hoppy aroma but with underlying roasted malt, coffee and dark, dried fruit. Flavor is really remarkable. Warming alcohol is evident up front. Middle has more dark fruit, cherry, vanilla, oak, resinous citrus hops. Red wine towards the finish. Long, bitter with a light smack of hops. Only thing I’m not digging is the abv which is evident from the aroma to the finish. Besides that, this is a GREAT beer from Avery.

This was a very strange beer. It was dark black with a tan whip-cream-like head. The smell made me think chocolate. The taste followed suit but had some real hoppiness going on. Sorta grassy, piney, and almost like chocolate mints. This beer was tasty but very complex. It felt like my taste buds were being assaulted!

Bitter at the end and into the after with accents of roast and diminishes the fruit. Very Impy Stout/Porter Esque. Decent.
2.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Beaver (874) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - JUN 13, 2007
22 oz bottle. Pours a ruby brown with a large fluffy off white head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is chocolate malts, and oddly enough pesto and leather - pretty odd for a beer. Peppery nuts and smoke come out as it warms.
The flavor is sweet sugary malts and cola followed by some piney hops (with tinges of pesto - it’s stuck in my head now), a little banana and smoke, and a sharp medicinal plastic finish. The mouthfeel is medium and creamy.
Overall, an interesting and unique beer, it just doesn’t appeal to me.
