3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 mugabe (251) - SWEDEN - DEC 13, 2009
Bottle. Hazy amber, dissipating medium head. Fruity hop aroma with some citrus and soap. Very rich mouthfeel, somewhat weird taste of pineapple, resin, spruce and alcohol. Nice bittersweet finish with a touch of malt. More of DIPA than the barley wine expected. In a good way.

This is my cup of tea. Lots of hops and bitterness.
Not as rough as a double IPA (disguised as barley wine) should be, but still good enough.
Will drink again!

22 oz bomber. This beer just makes me happy. Everything about it is really solid without any major surprises, but in a good way. As advertised, this barley is definitely on the hoppy side of things but never out of balance. Leafy florals and thick citrus are big in the aroma, along with nutty sweet malts, fruit basket, and minor weak proof alcohol. A good fluffy white head on the pour as well, nice lacing and a good layer of retention, medium-thick cloudy body with some particulate, and a bright rusty orange color in the appearance. Great body and feel on the palate that has the right amount of oomph for a barely wine while still being nicely creamy and drinkable. The balance here in the flavors really is perfect also the whole way through. The earthy, woody leaf hops are quite nice, with nutty caramel cereal that blends into sugary sweet candy fruits and bitter citrus through the finish. This was a top of the line barley wine that maybe didn’t push the limits as much as it could, but its very hard to complain that it didn’t.

22oz. bomber with at least a year on it. Pours a slight hazy orange-gold with a large head that lingers; good lacing. Aroma is fresh and ripe dark fruits, caramel, and some citrus and earthy hops. Flavor is more juicy fresh and ripe fruits, caramel, toffee, and some light citrus. A decent enough barleywine but nothing standout.

22 oz. bottle from Grape & Gourmet. Muddy orangeish-brown pour with a creamy off-white head. Strong pineapple and grapefruit hop aroma. Some sweetness in the aroma is also noted. Flavor is of grapefruit rind and caramel with the grapefruit rind dominating. Slight alcohol burning. Hoppier than many barleywines I have tasted but there is enough malt that I bet this cellars well. Really good stuff. Avery does it again.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 lithy (2913) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 1, 2009
Dark reddish-orange, puffy loose beige head, loopy lacing. Big fruity, malty, dried raisins, alcohol aroma. Taste is not as biting, fruits, raisins, prunes, caramel, toffee, apples.

UPDATED: SEP 22, 2010 It poured a slightly hazy dark golden liquid with a medium sized dirty white foam that left allot of lacing. Quite a nice look actually.
It had a smell of sweet malt, caramell and wood. There where more smells but I couldn’t quite put my finger on what they where.
The mouthfeel was smooth with a thich body. It had a sweet taste of caramell and malt with an alcoholic finish. The flavour was a bit intence just the way I like it. A very nice beer again from Avery, definitely something I want to drink again.
