COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This dangerously drinkable garnet beauty is a hop lover’s delight. The intense dry-hop nose and the alcohol content are perfectly balanced for a caramel candy-like malt finish. This is a serious beer for serious beer afficionados and it only gets better with age. Cellarable for 3 years.

Cloudy, mahogany pour with a decent head. Culte label, but no world leader on it, just some flying pigs. The aroma is great. Sweet malt, floral hops, and citrus. This has an intense flavor that hits on several levels. Molasses sweetness and sharp hops stand out, with touches of smoked peat, toffee, and lemon. Hats off to Avery for another top notch brew.

UPDATED: JAN 2, 2010 pour was garnet withoff white head and aromas off hops and malts taste is something of which no other barley wine that has passed my lips before, or one of my favorite styles it wouldn’t be how this is in the barley wine style I have no idea I’m sure it should be in another class like an american strong ale its just way to hopped up the last beer i had that tasted like this was Surly furious and that was an IPA go figure this low score is due to the fact it does not at all represent the style

Bottle. Deep copper, small off-white head. Smells of piney hops, caramel. Extremely soft malt under a just so bitter hop flavor. Medium-full body, soft mouthfeel, just melts in your mouth. This beer has a lot going on for it.

Dark reddish amber pour with excellent one finger frothy beige head. Aroma is grassy and grapefruit citrus with some toffee and vinous qualities. Surprisingly, the hop character is dominating. Flavor is resinous hoppy with an excellent caramel sweetness to balance it all out. Alcohol character is warming and welcome, but never overpowering. Palate is silky smooth with the mildest of carbonation and a semi-dry finish that leaves a coating of hop glory. Very well put together.

When this beer is fresh it is one of the best "Barleywines" out there. I say this with a wink as it could stand up to the best Double IPA’s. Awesome.

A very nice brew. Well balanced and loaded with malt and loaded with floral aroma and hopps. Good effort.

Source: 22 oz, 2008 bottle purchased at Frugal MacDoogal’s in Nashville.
Glass: Poured into a tulip glass.
Appearance: Poured a deep amber color with red and orange highlights. One finger of tan head.
Aroma: Sweet malt dominates. Not a lot of hops present due to the age. Hints of brown sugar and cinnamon are present.
Flavor: Sweet malt dominates the palate. Warming alcohol finish.
Palate: Full body with soft carbonation and a chewy mouthfeel.
Overall: Pretty decent. Not a top 10 BW for me, but still very drinkable.

On tap @ Map Room. Clear amber fading to ochre @ edges; inch-high fungussy head that devolves into Swiss cheese on the sides of the glass. Aroma has some radish and lots of clean, uncomplicated hops; tons of hops in the flavor, a bit overdone actually; ends exceedingly bitter. Coats one’s tongue, medium-full bodied. Grows on you as it warms, but reaffirms my belief that American barleywines are not my favorite style...seem to lack refinement.
