cstuartj (305), Washington, USA Feb 15, 2008 Bomber, pours a deep copper/redish/orange with a small off-white head. Laces well as you drink. Nose is heavy on the hopes and dark fruits. Bitter strong attack that is followed by a deep dark hoppy/fruity finish. Very nice and complex beer. adrian910ss (1395), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 14, 2008 22 oz bomber. Pours a clear yet dark copper orange color with a small beige head. Aroma of hops, pine, grapefruit, orange and floral notes. Taste is tangy with a strong hoppy presence and hints of orange, grapefruit, pine malt. Not as sweet as most barleywines, but it holds its own for sure. Excellent. ChazMania (408), Pasadena, California, USA Feb 13, 2008 Bottled. Pours a nice cantalope/amber color. Very little head. Aroma is sweet and crisp. The flavor is big, bold, very thorough on the tongue. There is a big hop/pine flavor with a metallic like tinge on the backside. It does not seem as overly sweet as one of the other barleywines that I’m familiar with. A good winner of a beer here. jobyone (234), Charlotte, USA Feb 13, 2008 Draft. Pours a dark red with big off white head. The aroma has lots of citrus and some hops. The taste is a good balance of sweet caramel and some hop bitterness. Lacks the sickly sweetness of many barley wines and all the better for it. Goodgrief (1144), Middletown, Delaware, USA Feb 10, 2008 Sept. 2006 - Finally, a good Avery beer! Very good representation of the style. Reddish golden brown color with nice head and lacing. Aroma of caramel and grapefruit represented flavor. Very sweet, very hoppy. Nice "big" beer! Charlzm (247), Los Angeles, California, USA Feb 9, 2008 Updated: Feb 11, 2008Bottled, consumed on 02/09/08. Pours a clear dark orange/copper. Lots of small, active bubbles. Initial head grew larger than I anticipated with my pour, making a three-finger off-white foamy head of fine, pillowy consistency. Spicy hop nose with metallic note. Slightly thicker and creamier than water. First blush is spicy hops with a sweet malt flavor right behind. Dry without being parching, the finish has loads of bitter hops but is balanced into a sublime, lingering aftertaste that fades into spicy warmth. Avery sure does make some good beer. Tilley4 (218), Huron, Tennessee, USA Feb 9, 2008 This is the most beautiful barleywine that I’ve ever had. It just glows in the glass a beautiful rusty amber color with a nice head.
Smells of hops, malt and dark fruit just like any good barleywine should.
Wonderfully smooth taste of sweet roasted malts, dark fruit, hops, hops, hops,....Awesome!!!
I loved this barleywine and rank it up there with Old Ruffian and Bigfoot... yesyouam (587), Fairport, New York, USA Feb 5, 2008 Avery Hog Heaven is a rather clear, viscous-looking red ale with a thi, bubbly, elastic off-white head that leaves nice lacing. The aroma is of sweet and sour malt with grass, hay, orange peel and allspice. It is medium-full bodied, smooth and slick. It leaves the mouth a bit dry, almost gritty. It’s a bit sour and quite bitter. Nothing really noteworthy about the flavor. It’s well balanced.
