glennmastrange (809), hobe sound, Florida, USA Jul 24, 2007 Bottle. Moderate aromas of caramel, resin and orange with light notes of broth, raisin, butterscotch, wine and just a bit of smoke. Head is creamy, off white and is mostly lasting with head lacing that dries to the glass. Color is a murky red/brown. Flavor starts heavily sweet and lightly acidic and finishes lightly acidic and bitter. Palate is med/full, between creamy and syrupy (chewy) with a soft carbonation and a slight alcohol smell and aftertaste. Great taste from a barlywine, 22 oz went down real easy. juiceisloose (640), Windermere, Florida, USA Jul 22, 2007 Had on draught. Poured a dark red color with a thin head. The aroma was of dark fruits, some malts, and monster piney hops. The flavor was much the same with the hops dominating every aspect. There was a little sweetness in there from some caramel and malts as well. It was full bodied and easy drinking that hid the alcohol pretty well. It finished clean with that hop bitterness. Pretty good for the american barley wine style. ElGaucho56 (386), USA Jul 20, 2007 pours a lucious red with small ringlet of a head. Piney hop nose forewarning heavy IBUs. Smooth thick mouthfeel, near immediate bitterness curbed by sweet alcohol, more hop bitterness and citrus tones toward the finish. Nice, but like almost every other American barleywine I’ve tried, over-hopped to a point of detraction. starflyer58 (26), Norman, Oklahoma, USA Jul 17, 2007 Aroma: heavy hops, grapefruit, almost grass or flowerish...
Appearance: smaller, creamy head - color of a dark iced tea...
Flavor: intense decent duration hops blanketed in a malty/sweet/soft beginning.
Palate: soft carbonation but more than the Horn Dog I had the other night.. I have to say I like it this way.
Overall: It’s awakening my belief in Barleywine style... my mouth is tingling (high alcohol? hops? am I just tired? it’s tingling nonetheless) UofFkid (108), Orlando, Florida, USA Jul 17, 2007 Tap. Nice dark orange pour with little head. Tons of sweet aroma flowing. Easy drinking up front, then nice hop finish. SamuraiArtist (292), portland, Oregon, USA Jul 17, 2007 Bottle: Pours an amber/orange with a huge off-white foamy head. Tons of aroma of candylike malts and lots of hopy juicy aroma. Flavor is malty and a little carmelly but very bitter and hoppy. More imperial ipa like then anything. Hops are a little dank and spicy and florally. The body is medium and not syrupy like most barleywines. Very drinkable. WolfsBlood84 (103), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA Jul 15, 2007 1P 6oz. Bottle - Pours a pleasing dark reddish/lite brownish color with small light tan head. Smells sweet, malty, and hoppy. Tastes malty, caramel and slightly sweet at first then a little bitter hoppy aftertaste. Tastes clean and smooth for being 9.2% APV. Thought it was pretty good and @ $6 for this bottle - damn cheap. This is the second Avery’s I’ve tried and certainly not the last. yayforbeer (641), Orange Park, Florida, USA Jul 14, 2007 Bomber from Total Wine. Served in a small Val-Dieu goblet. Dark brown pour with a nice beige head. Aroma is malty and hoppy. Flavor is excellent with loads of caramel malts and a medium sweetness, and then the hops take over. Plenty of hops here. Alcohol bite is pretty well hidden. I offered a taste to my wife and she just gave me that “you must be nuts” look and passed, then hit me up for a White Russian cocktail. An excellent barleywine. I like it.
