zootfinster (179), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 10, 2007 A nice dark pour. Substantial tan head. Sweet slightly hoppy citric flavor. Very smooth and easy to drink after4ever (2711), Brier, Washington, USA Jul 8, 2007 22. This is at least a year old, which I might not have allowed to happen if I’d simply taken the time to read the "hop head’s delight" business in the commercial description. Oh, well. Cest la guerre. Pours murky ebony brown with toffee/garnet highlights. Thick sudsy tan head with bits of slippery lace running down the sides. Sweaty, footy, husky, caramel/toffee/raisin nose. Deceptively light body, soft carb, and well-modulated flavors comprise a pleasant attack. All the same notes from the nose back for the mid-palate. It really is easy drinking, they’re not kidding. Not much finish. I get the feeling I should have hit this one fresh, but it’s still pretty damn good. ilovedarkbeer (1326), Dallas, Texas, USA Jul 8, 2007 Was dissapointed with this one. Pours a reddish amber color typical of a dark IPA or DIPA. Tastes of hops, malt, barley and a bit of caramel. Weaker flavor than i am used to. Will not buy again. BigDaddyBlues (39), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jul 8, 2007 Bomber purchased at From the Vine. This is one of the best beers I have tasted so far. I am a hophead. I did not really enjoy the hoppy stouts I tried so I was dubious about a hoppy barley wine. Was I ever wrong. I kept looking at the glass hoping it would spontaneously refill. The aroma was hoppy but sweet. The first sip was the same, hoppy but sweet. The winey state that gives the style its name took over from there. I have tried a number of Avery beers recently. This is the one I will reach for in the future. redlight (1445), Winter Park, Florida, USA Jul 7, 2007 resiney with rich caramel aroma. Pours a dark amber color. Smooth and sweet upfront, followed by a huge hop bitterness, pine resin, dark fruit, dried figs, hints of citrus in the hops, with a heavy malt backbone, thick caramel. scottmc (167), Lakewood, Colorado, USA Jul 6, 2007 Great Barley Wine ale with a good use of hops. The IBU’s are ridiculous on this beer, only adding to a great taste that packs a punch. A heavy hoppy aroma with sweet and earthy hops and a fully heavy body. chadje (129), Pasadena, California, USA Jun 30, 2007 A dark amber color with a citrusy sweet hoppy smell. A hoppy beer good bitter aftertaste. RblWthACoz (963), Brooklyn, New York, USA Jun 20, 2007 Hog Heaven pours a clear dark brown and red with a lot of head of course. The nose is fairly muted with what seems like a mild pineapple skin smell. The flavor is smooth with a fruity edge...maybe raspberry and oranges together....but just a little bit. Overall it is a smooth and even brew with little going against it.
