henry3r (586), Wichita, Kansas, USA Apr 8, 2007 The 22 ounce bottle poured a clear, deep, reddish amber beverage with a modest off-white creamy head that was mostly diminishing but left good lacing on the glass. The beer presented mostly fruity aromas, primarily lemon, plum and notes of lemon meringue. The body was full with lively carbonation and a sharp, dry mouthfeel. The flavors are huge, starting out lightly sweet with a medium bitter kicker. As the flavor matures on the palate it slowly becomes more bitter through the long finish. Flavors of dry sherry, plum and lemon peel present themselves throughout. The finish is fairly dry and it leaves a nice warmth in the chest. drewbeerme (2223), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 7, 2007 Updated: Apr 22, 2009sampled on tap at the 5th Boulder Strong Ale Fest. I don’t think this was on cask but whatever. this is an extremely hopped up version of an already hoppy BW. very tasty and way over the top with hops, but i think it works. 3.8.
2/23/08, 99 vintage (9 years old), this is way past its prime, vegetal and alcohol. 2.5.
4/15/09, on tap at the maproom, a pleasent hopy aroma mostly piney but there’s a lot of alc and malt sweetness too so it isn’t a huge hop bomb. the flavor starts out okay but as a real rough middle and astringent finish with a questionable malt profile, i didn’t take notes but this was hard to get through, just a classic avery brew lacking refinement in any respectable way. 3.2. bierkoning (5992), La Tropica, Netherlands Apr 7, 2007 Bottle. orange brown color. Malt, red berries and flowery and oily hops in the aroma. Malty sweet start, followed by a hard punch of hops. Oily and earthy hops. A massive beer with an almost endless hopbitter and citrus aftertaste. bitter (1137), Henderson, Nevada, USA Apr 2, 2007 this is a great barley wine....always better fresh at the brewery then in the bottle. a nice big beer with all the accutraments we expect. carmel hazy color. huge nose of citrus and pine infused with a big sweet backfill. nice balance. highly drinkable. riversideAK (2650), Shoreline, Washington, USA Apr 1, 2007 Sweet toffee like sugary aroma. Clear reddish orange with not alot of head. Initial hop kick then intense sugary sweetness. Kind of woody flavor with some caramel sugar. I could not drink more than one bomber of this stuff. JB175 (1660), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 1, 2007 2004 bottle. Nice, cloudy-amber color with a medium light-tan head. Aroma of sweet tangerine, orange, and subdued grapefruit. Taste is a pleasant and full-bodied mix of crisp citrus, sweet caramel, and the remnants of those hops that have faded just a bit with time. Nice BW that I will be revisiting many times in the future. chimpscampee (556), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Mar 31, 2007 Updated: Jun 2, 2007Perhaps best BW I’ve ever had. Great easy drinking flavor. None of the grainy alcohol burn found in many BW’s. Wonderfully dry but just a bit more candied sweetness then I like. rederic (1787), montréal, Quebec, Canada Mar 27, 2007 Cloudy amber hue, with a small beige head, leaving laces, sweet toasted malt nose, with a floral hop citrusy note, with some piney and leafy accents, with a faint fruitiness in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a sweet malty, hoppy, fruity character of peaches, candied oranges, with a good flowery hop grassiness and pineyness, some caramel and toffee accents, a bit citrusy, with a mild warming alcoholic mouthfeel, leading towards a malty, leafy hop bitterness finish. Good beer in general, but too much hoppy for the style.
