monkeychugg55 (214), Joliet, Illinois, USA Jun 11, 2009 Bomber. This one pours a clear, dark red copper with a medium-large chunky, off-white head that leaves a ton of lacing. Aroma is bold pine and citrus hops upfront with a soft, fruity, earthy, caramel malt backbone. Grapefruit, apple, and pear are evident, along with bread, hay and toffee. The flavor is, at first, a strong rush of bitter piney hops. Then, the sweet malt comes through and almost drowns out the bitter. However, the bitterness far outlasts the sweetness and eventually is left all alone to linger in the mouth. Mouthfeel is thick and oily, with a lot of resin, and slightly cloying sugar. This barley wine drinks more like DIPA, and, although I do like bitter beers, would have liked to less hop profile and more of a complex malt character. Very drinkable and enjoyable however. deyholla (508), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Jun 9, 2009 Bottle. Poured amber with an off-white head. Aroma was sweet and malty. Flavor was nice with sweet caramel flavors with the slightest citrus flavor. Diogène (544), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Jun 4, 2009 Red amber with almost no head. Aroma is hops, pine, pot, citrus and caramel. Flavor is also very hopy with pine, pot, citrus, caramel and malt. Slipstream (735), USA Jun 2, 2009 Cloudy, mahogany pour with a decent head. Culte label, but no world leader on it, just some flying pigs. The aroma is great. Sweet malt, floral hops, and citrus. This has an intense flavor that hits on several levels. Molasses sweetness and sharp hops stand out, with touches of smoked peat, toffee, and lemon. Hats off to Avery for another top notch brew. guyinchicago (516), marengo, Illinois, USA May 25, 2009 pour was garnet withoff white head and aromas off hops and malts taste is something of which no other barley wine that has passed my lips before, or one of my favorite styles it wouldn’t be how this is in the barley wine style I have no idea I’m sure it should be in another class like an american strong ale its just way to hopped up the last beer i had that tasted like this was Surly furious and that was an IPA go figure this low score is due to the fact it does not at all represent the style meeple (52), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada May 21, 2009 Bottle. Deep copper, small off-white head. Smells of piney hops, caramel. Extremely soft malt under a just so bitter hop flavor. Medium-full body, soft mouthfeel, just melts in your mouth. This beer has a lot going on for it.
oteyj (716), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA May 14, 2009 Dark reddish amber pour with excellent one finger frothy beige head. Aroma is grassy and grapefruit citrus with some toffee and vinous qualities. Surprisingly, the hop character is dominating. Flavor is resinous hoppy with an excellent caramel sweetness to balance it all out. Alcohol character is warming and welcome, but never overpowering. Palate is silky smooth with the mildest of carbonation and a semi-dry finish that leaves a coating of hop glory. Very well put together. WinoInTraining (104), Longmont, Colorado, USA May 9, 2009 When this beer is fresh it is one of the best "Barleywines" out there. I say this with a wink as it could stand up to the best Double IPA’s. Awesome.
