3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Hog Heaven has a wonderful sweet caramel aroma counterbalanced with a pine hop bitter smell. Dark fruits, malt and black licorice are all in play as well. Nearly perfect aroma except for a musty dank smell underneath all the complexity. Looks great; wonderful crimson color with white head. Tastes sweet up front with a sharp hop bitterness afterward. Aftertaste curiously goes back to sweet after bitter. Palate is just ok. Very unique take on the style. When drunk fresh, it’s like a barleywine mixed with an imperial IPA. I aged a bottle; I’m interested in how it will taste with a few years of age.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Aroma is a lush blend of hops malt and yeast. Appearance is a thick cream colored long-lived head with plenty of Lace and a clear copper amber color. Flavor is very interesting, complex, and related to the palate. But there are some sharp points and edges from the bitterness & the acids from hops and carbonics. This is not a lightweight beer for Serious fans or Alky's.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tap at Yellow Ape. Very leafy, dank, grassy hop nose with some light caramel hidden out back. Very bitter, very dank and hay-like. This is hugely hopped, but not in any way I really like. Barley gets completely left behind.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Look: pours a reddish copper color. Light tan head. Very clear.
Smell: alcohol burn. Slight tropical fruit notes. Caramel.
Taste: heavy alcohol. Hop forward. Slight citrus bitterness.
Feel: extremely dry. Medium - low carbonation. Leaves a thick film on the mouth.
Overall: ok beer. Too much alcohol for my palate.
First drank: home 11/2/14

There’s a fine line between barleywine and double ipa... This is so close to the line it’s crazy. I feel like a bit of age would do this some good, because it’s extremely hoppy. But in all reality I like it a lot...

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
On tap at Kamikaze. Not in the mood to drink this as what I waited all day tp drink (Ushitora Brewery) for ran out... 750+tx (820) yen for 200 ml 9.2% an opaque deep orange-brown with a filmy beige head and ok lacing. Definitely a us style Barleywine with a huge dank resinous musty hop bouquet and a little maltiness struggling to get through the hop onslaught. Very sharply carbonated and exceptionally bitter - the taste is like licking a pine cone. Not balanced and not really what I want in a Barleywine. I feel it is more like an imperial IPA or triple IPA, just way too hoppy. Maybe if it warms up it’ll improve but at this point I just want to go home... Well i was right, it became slightly more balanced after warming up displaying some malt character but remaining a mistly dank resinous bitter beer. Not at all what I want from a Barleywine...

650 ml. bottle shared by Kraddel during the (Ice) Cider/Perry tasting @ Barely Legal Tasting Room. Thank you! This is clearly some kind of vintage but I cannot find a date on the bottle. It is possible that the Vintage is 2013. Dark amber, little head. Typical oxidized nose, herbal, heavy on herbs, bitter old hops. Taste is bitter oxidized, liquorish, bitter herbal, old hops, oxidized bitter herbal-ness, light toffee, grains. Body is aged. Decent but not stellar.
