COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This dangerously drinkable garnet beauty is a hop lover’s delight. The intense dry-hop nose and the alcohol content are perfectly balanced for a caramel candy-like malt finish. This is a serious beer for serious beer afficionados and it only gets better with age. Cellarable for 3 years.

Overly hopped, good malt bill to back it up, but u might as well call this Yeti or sasquatch. since bigfoot has been around for years and this beer is just they’re own version of it

Aroma is sweet, sweet caramel and bread malts, along with citrus hops, pine resin and alcohol. Deep, dark cloudy orange with a small off white head with good retention and lacing. More of the same in the taste. Incredibly sweet caramel. Lots of hop bitterness. Lots of pine resin. Not a lot of carbonation. Sticky. Overall a very good example of one of my favorite styles.

2009 vintage (5years) Pours a pretty dark amber with a fair amount of white head thats got about an inch of lacing. The smell is full of malt and caramel with a nice underlying piney citrus. The first impression is wow thats smooth. This particular barleywine holds up exceptionally well to aging. The cellaring really tones down the malts and hops and hops and leaves the citrus as a major player qnd puts the malt more on the back end. Another note on this aged version is most beers after 3 years seem to get a universal raisin taste and this beer really didnt get that.

UPDATED: AUG 30, 2014 Bottle. Pours clear deep amber with off-white head. Great hippy aroma of resin, pine, raisin, and citrus. Smooth clean taste of raisin, other dark fruits, caramel, citrus fruits, with a bitter finish. Great balance, big body. Love it.

Transfer from BA review on 11-6-12- Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – Served a slightly hazy honey brown color with a little bit of reddish hue. Upon serving there was a one finger cream colored head that faded to leave a decent level of lacing. Smell – The aroma was heaviest of a caramel and toffee sweetness. Mixed with these sweeter aromas are a lighter bready smell, some citrus hop aromas and a light boozy smell. Taste – The taste starts out with a strong biscuit and bready base with some of the caramel sweetness that was detected in the nose. As the taste advances further some of the caramel diminishes as hop flavors begin coming to the taste profile. Grapefruit and pine hop flavors begin the hop profile but are soon joined by some earthy hop flavors as well. In the end some alcohol flavors meet up with the lightly sweet and somewhat hoppy flavors of the brew to leave a warming hoppy flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer was just above average in terms of creaminess with a carbonation level that was on the slightly lower side. Pretty nice for the style, the hop flavors, and the light alcohol burn at the end of the taste. Overall – Not a bad brew. A, not too sweet or too boozy, barleywine. It isn’t a powerhouse of flavor like some barley wines, but has its place as a more subtle but pleasant barleywine.

This one has it all, just hiding out of sight. Nice reddish body with minimal head. Aroma is malt and grains, alcohol also tickles the nose. Taste is more malt and (?)....don’t know. I agree with Indiana Red that it might be worth while trying a cellared bottle. Very smooth and drinkable, alcohol hides nicely, and becomes apparent slowly.

Bottle shared with Edgar at home. Snifter. Pours a crimson-brown with a small white head. Some mild lacing. Aroma is a combination of booze, carmelized malts, dark bread and dough, muddled hops, and leather. The taste is a unique for a barley wine. It has a slight booze taste up front with a warming on my palette. Then it’s followed by a malt profile and chased with serious hops for a b wine. Finish is hoppy and slight bitter with booze. Medium body, moderate carb. Nicely done and unique.

Avery does a nice bit of work with this one. One day I will think to do this rating business while I am consuming the beverage. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

As far as barleywines are concerned I have a very discerning palate. Avery’s Hog Heaven is a take on it. A plum hue. Lacy head. I can detect the booze but it is not overpowering. It is a bit more malty than I like. With a tinge of sweetness. It is pretty straightforward. Good but not great. I’d like to see the booze hiked up more. Dandy for a cool summer night but definitely not in league with the Alaskan Barleywine.
