COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the 1700’s one crafty brewer discovered that a healthy dose of hops and an increased alcohol content perserved his ales during the long voyage to India (as depicted in our label) to quench the thirst of British troops. Today, we tip our hat to that historic innovation by brewing Colorado’s hoppiest pale ale. Avery IPA demands to be poured into your favorite glass to truly appreciate the citrusy, floral bouquet and the rich, malty finish. Brewed by hopheads for hopheads!

Pours light amber with a big, fluffy, lacing head. Fruity and citrus hop aroma with a similar flavor. Solid IPA but somewhat unremarkable. I would certainly drink this again, however I don’t think I would really seek this out.

Poured into a Sam Adams Sensory Glass. No freshness date. Color is a dull carmel. Head is very fluffy and sticks around for a while leaving wonderful lacing. Aroma is of floral and citrus notes. Taste is quite similar; very heavy on the floral taste. Mouthfeel is bitter, smooth, and at the end it is bitter again. Leaves a dry taste in your mouth. Overall, This is a solid ipa, nice and hoppy. A great representation of the style. I would recommend this one. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 12-11-2008 01:27:52

bottled. Very pale in color, packs punch. An excellent textbook/old school(wtf?) IPA.

12 oz bottle. Pours bronze color with a lasting, foamy, white head, lots of lacing. Aroma of biscuit malt and apple juice, some citrus hops come through while the beer warms up. Citrusy hops dominate the flavor with biscuit malt and vinous fruit provide some balance. Long, hoppy finish. Not my favorite IPA.

What an exquisite floral, citrus aroma. I had this from the bottle in Australia, and if it has this much hop aroma after the travel then I would love to try this beer oon tap in Colorado. Lovely clean, malt that supports the hops very well. Great beer!

Aroma: Ha, what an ale! I grow hops and today a crisis occurred resulting in a giant cluster of gorgeous brewer’s gold hops being ripped from the vine. The scents swirling around while I was trying to save the rest of the plant were amazing and brewer’s gold is not that aromatic. That event did make me want to have an IPA and Avery’s was on hand. One whiff of this ale’s gigantic hop bouquet brings a pleasant feeling and reminds me that it is worth all the time and effort to baby those crazy plants. Citrus is the main scent with an herbal backbone and some dried apricots floating around. There is a very light pine resign scent to it, but very subtle. Smelling this ale is actually brightening the room for me. Appearance: Golden/amber is color with a gorgeously clear body. The head is white and frothy with no hint of dissipating. Lovely. Taste/Palate: Hop slap! Freshly mowed grass with pine needles put in a composter over bitter orange peel is what the initial flavor would have to be described as. The hops and carbonation dance along my tongue to the back of my throat tickling every nerve ending throughout! The light body combined with the overwhelming hop profile makes this one damn dry IPA in the finish. The fact that my saliva glands are in over-drive makes me think that this beer would be a perfect food ale. The acidity is complimentary and after the beer has left my mouth it continues to develop. Overall: I have had most of the IPAs brewed in the state of Colorado and this is the very best one, period. There are other IPAs, and this brewery among many others makes them, but this ale is so easy to drink that it beckons yet another sip, is light enough in alcohol to session and pairs with so many different dishes that there should not be an enlightened refrigerator in the state of Colorado without this beer in it.

Faint citrus hops aroma... Flavor has a lot of citrus sweetness, notes of pineapple... Not much on the palate, still a pretty solid ipa...

Poured into a pint glass. A: Translucent light brown/orange color. Thick off-white head with good retention. Lots of lacing. S: Sweet corn husk and grains. Lots of leafy hops. Fruity, but not very citrusy, hard to pinpoint. T: Kind of typical, run of the mill in flavor. It’s very good, there just isn’t a lot of depth to this beer. Decent balance with hops and malts. The smell lies, since there is a citrus element. Other than that it’s grainy with earthy hop character. Small bitter aftertaste that lingers. M: Starts out very carbonated and biting, but it loses that throughout the beer. D: Not a bad brew, but I wouldn’t want to deal with the aftertaste all night long. Don’t get me wrong, bitterness is great, but it is best experienced with other flavors as well. This is my third Avery beer and their beers really seem to be hit or miss.
