COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the 1700’s one crafty brewer discovered that a healthy dose of hops and an increased alcohol content perserved his ales during the long voyage to India (as depicted in our label) to quench the thirst of British troops. Today, we tip our hat to that historic innovation by brewing Colorado’s hoppiest pale ale. Avery IPA demands to be poured into your favorite glass to truly appreciate the citrusy, floral bouquet and the rich, malty finish. Brewed by hopheads for hopheads!

Bottle. Pours gold with a white head. Floral hoppy aroma with some citric hints. The flavor brings earthy, floral hops, and a bit of sweet malt. Decent, but not overly impressive.

UPDATED: AUG 15, 2006 In the bottle at the Huber Haus IPA tasting. Rich dark gold color. Off-white head. Slight toasted aroma with a weak hop aroma. Strong mid-palate dryness. Hard tartness to the finish. Long slow burn of bitterness at the end. Awesome lacing left in the glass. UPDATE 8/15/6: In the bottle. Pours gold with a gratuitous white head. Aroma has an interesting meaty scent coupled with a strong piney citrus hop smell. Very nice lacing and cloudy good head retention. Great juniper flavor. Nearly gin-like. Citrus lemon, lime and grapefruit flavors round out the thick palate. An all-around good beer.

UPDATED: APR 14, 2005 2004 bottle. Pours a medium light shade of orange, with some bright gold-yellows. Very clear. Moderate foamy white head. Smells straightforward. Lots of high alpha hops aroma, citrusy but also a lot of dryness. Flavor begins with a large dose of bittersweet hops, like a ripe naval orange, moving in to some dry malting, with more floral hops notes towards the finish. Body is medium to medium-light. No trace of alcohol. Complexity is lacking. Having had 4 or 5 Arcadia IPAs the night before, I can definitely detect the lesser quality in Avery’s IPA. No interplay of malt and hops, and the hops flavor sings a single note for most of the beer.

Rerate Bottle purchased at Hop and Leaf Feb 2005. Much better than I remember or just good relative to all the crap I drank in TN?? I’d like to think that this one is a bit better, with more complexity of hops and a good, if somewhat light malt base.

A: The pour is an orange-ish color with about a finger’s worth of white head and some streaks of lacing. S: A good citrus note to the aroma. It’s more of a rind/peel sort of smell, with some piney notes that provide sort of an oily, resinous character to the whole beer. T: Though the nose lead me to believe this would be a very bitter IPA, it was rather controlled in this aspect. Yes, there is a solid bitter pine flavor as well as some grapefruit rind, but it’s not overpowering. A mild malt character, but it’s not really sweet at all. M: The body is medium with a fairly lively carbonation and a bit of bitterness lingering on the tongue. D: This was a decent IPA, but it doesn’t quite stack up with some of the offerings I’ve become accustomed to here in Southern California.

On tap. Pours amber with a small head. This one is all hop, and it’s kinda unique. The hops are really fruity, like mixed fruits, which reminds of bubblegum or even fruit loops. There’s a fair amount of grassiness as well, which mixes well with the grainy bitterness of the malts.

nice deep gold color with a small white head. a very small amount of hops but a very bitter smell. thicker than i was expecting from an ipa and the hops are quite tame.

On tap at the brewery in August 2009. Reviewed from notes. Pours a medium amber-copper color with an off white head that leaves behind a tiny bit of lacing. Nose brings a good amount of citrus rind with a bit of citrus as well. Some amber and caramel malt in the background. Taste lays off the hop presence from the nose, bringing forward more balance and losing some of the nice hop integration that existed in the nose. Feel is medium with slight bitterness. Drinks pretty well and is one of their better non-sour offerings. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 10-13-2010

Draught at The Flying Saucer in Raleigh, NC. Clear yellow-orange color with lasting white head that laced the glass. BIG flowery hop nose. Crisp and dry, but too much carbonation upset my palate a bit. Very good flowery hop flavor and bitterness. A decent IPA, but smells better than it tastes.
