COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the 1700’s one crafty brewer discovered that a healthy dose of hops and an increased alcohol content perserved his ales during the long voyage to India (as depicted in our label) to quench the thirst of British troops. Today, we tip our hat to that historic innovation by brewing Colorado’s hoppiest pale ale. Avery IPA demands to be poured into your favorite glass to truly appreciate the citrusy, floral bouquet and the rich, malty finish. Brewed by hopheads for hopheads!

Bright orange in colour, good sized white coloured head - very creamy, good retention, great lacing. The aroma is floral, some pine and grapefruit, light caramel malts but the hops dominate. The chewy hops carry over into the flavour along with some caramel sweetness, lots of pine and some grass. Dry mouthfeel, medium body, medium/high carbonation. Finishes with a lingering hop bitterness. This is pretty good, Avery’s smaller beers have much more balance then some of there bigger beers. Not a whole lot of balance here but I can’t really complain.

355ml bottle obtained in a trade with <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?U target=blank>piscator34, thanks Kris.

UPDATED: SEP 24, 2008 draught. Pours a slightly hazy copper with a fine lasting white head. The aroma is nice and zesty with adequate hop strength. Hints of pine, grapefruit, caramel, and tea abound. The flavor has assertive, clean, citrusy bite. Malts are nice here, just sweet enough to balance everything out. If you can get a nice fresh sample, it’s really aromatic, spicy, and dry. This is pretty much a standard IPA, though excellently executed.

On tap at Barley’s. Good to see Avery back in town. The pour is dark gold with a very impressive white head. It looks just a little cloudy. The aroma has American hops right up front. Plenty of grapefruit and a bit of pine are noted. Malts seem to be right in line. The flavor really delivers. It’s a very predictable, but satisfyingly robust and balanced India pale. Hefty suggestions of pine and citrus are found and the sweetness here is something like sweetened green tea and honey. I think this is a superior example of the style.

Bottle. Pours a solid copper with nice looking white head. Plenty of hops are found in the aroma to sate my craving for an IPA and they’re clean and citrusy. Straight forward spicy grapefruit and a simple caramel sweetness are found. The flavor is equally bold. Hops hit the palate first and continue to leave a dry impact on the taste buds. Grapefruit, pine, and a little lemon. This is a straight up IPA, no bones about it. It is very clean and provides excellent emphasis on the bitter notes.

12oz bottle-A nice clear golden body with a nice white head and an aroma of hops, grapefruit, and citrus. Taste of the same but not as powerful in the hops as other IPA’s.

On tap a the Dog and Pony in Renton. Crisp clear grapefruit and pine in a well-rounded and tasty IPA. I need to re-rate this beer when it’s not competing with IIPAs in the same session.

the a-typical IPA. Pours dirty blond with a medium white head. Strong pine and citrus hop aroma. Flavor is nicely balanced biscuit and pale hay and grassy malts with a dry pine and cannabis finish.

Pours a slightly hazy orange colour with a small white head on the edges. Aroma of tropical fruits and some orange. Flavour of strong, bitter and crispy American hops, grapefruit, orange, caramel and some grass too. Medium bodied with a dry and fruity finish. Pleasant IPA.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 9/25/11

Aroma: The nose is fairly hoppy with some nice resin, grapefruit, and pine notes to it
Appearance: It pours a slightly cloudy orange color with bright white head that leaves spotty lacing
Flavor: The taste is lightly sweet, and heavy bitter with similar components to the nose
Palate: The body is medium (leaning full), and it has a sticky mouthfeel that is on style
Overall Impression: This was one of those "are you kidding me I haven’t rated that?" beers. Now it is not. I’m enjoyed Avery’s IPA before, but I guess I haven’t posted a rating on any of those prior occasions. A very solid IPA, that is what it is trying to be. Right on style, and rather well-made.
