3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 fordest (1954) - Santee/San Diego, California, USA - JUL 24, 2005
UPDATED: DEC 4, 2005 Draft at San Diego Brewing Co. Poured typical golden yellow with a decent head that left decent lacing. Aromas of grapefruity citrusy hops and flavors of the same. Maybe just a little watery on the flavor, but still a very tasty IPA.
3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 frankenkitty (1953) - Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA - MAR 28, 2006
Rocky, white and long-lasting over honey-hazed golden/copper with light carbonation. Laces like a strip-mine. Hops are prominent yet mild in the aroma appearing as juicy pink grapefruit. Flavor starts with incredible balance (making me think this is rather mild), but the hops somehow manage to intensify in the mouth to bring out bitter orange rind and pepper in the finish. Dishrag appears occasionally in aroma and flavor but does not detract from the experience. Somewhat thin on the palate, but a competitive IPA nonetheless.

Rerating this one with an upgrade. Excellent. Pours a hazy gold color, sits very pretty in the glass. Scent is tart and crisp. Flavor is of apricots and loads of grapefruit, reminscent of drinking Campari. Has a very big hoppy finish. What’s exceptional here it the palate on this one, full and slightly creamy. Just feels nice in the mouth. One of the better hopmonster IPAs I’ve encountered.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Immy (1942) - Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA - APR 6, 2006
12 oz bottle. Pours clear gold with a white head. Good lacing. Nose is sweet citrus; pink grapefruit, with a bit of floral scent. Flavor has good balance, not over-the-top hopped like many IPAs. Nice, smooth, very drinkable brew with a lively mouthfeel. Body is just slightly weak. Finish is a bit of a letdown, lightly bitter. Overall, a very solid offering from a brewer that continues to impress me.

12 fl. oz. bottle at Cardinal, Stavanger. Clear dark golden color, nice off-white head. Aroma is typical American hops. Flavor is malt, moderate sweet, hops and fine, but not extreme bitterness.

Tap: copper body. Aroma is huge grapefruit, some citrus. Flavor is the same, well put together IPA. Not a world classic, but certainly enjoyable.

Bright pale gold in color with a fizzy, foamy white head. Aroma is starch, grapefruit, honey dew, chamomile, lilacs and honey. Bold, paling hops at first touch. Intense, then reverting to a starchy scratchiness paired with an herbal mixed bag of lilies, carnations, daffodils and old pine needles. Encompassing bitterness and medium-bodied. Malts aren’t succinct but the hops pursued their mission nonetheless. Finishes with high bitterness and twanging sweet papaya.
