COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the 1700’s one crafty brewer discovered that a healthy dose of hops and an increased alcohol content perserved his ales during the long voyage to India (as depicted in our label) to quench the thirst of British troops. Today, we tip our hat to that historic innovation by brewing Colorado’s hoppiest pale ale. Avery IPA demands to be poured into your favorite glass to truly appreciate the citrusy, floral bouquet and the rich, malty finish. Brewed by hopheads for hopheads!

Hoppy, floral aromas. Golden hues. White medium head. Extremely bitter, maybe too hopped with out balance. A little light on the palate and really kind of plain. Surprised with the lack of carbonization.

Cleanly made, but at the scores I’m seeing, I frankly expected more from this brew. The hops are almost subdued, and that’s not what I want from an IPA.

bottle from BeerGestapo. thanks Mike. pours a light copper with a good sized white head. sweet smelling nose with a hint of citrus. flavor is pretty balanced, sweet malt base and a lightly bitter citrus finish. if this beer were just called a pale ale it would be pretty good for the style, but as an IPA it fails miserably. that being said I’m not a huge fan of IPAs so I found the beer to fairly drinkable.

UPDATED: APR 5, 2008 (USA) The color is golden yellow with a med-white head. There is a strong Hoppy / Citrus aroma here, And the taste is of pine needles !! The finish is kinda dry but not very bitter as i would expect.

Cloudy straw pour, big frothy head, serious lacing. Bitter piney aroma. Bitter, piny…(I think I had a bit to drink at this point…)

Intense pine/citrus and malty bouquet. Medium body is bitter and hoppy without the requisite--to my mind--balance of malt to withstand such aggressive hopping. I much prefer their Maharaja Imperial.

My favorite IPA so far. A cloudy orange/hazel color, slight head formation. Very smooth mouth feel, refreshing brew. Aroma is floral/spruce and earthy. The taste is strong of pine and cloves, a bit bitter on the aftertaste. On tap at the Yard House.

Maybe I’m off, but I didn’t enjoy this as much as I thought I would. I’m usually big on the big malty, higher alcohol IPAs. But just feels harsh and forced with all the screaming hops in the midst of some syrupy alcohol mess. Will try again though. Maybe me or the bottle are off.

UPDATED: DEC 31, 2007 355ml bottle (Pikkulintu, Helsinki , American Week 2007). Clear and with a thick tight head. Typical US ale bitterness, which is an unsophisticated charicature of the UK IPA style, but done to the extreme. If you can ignore the intrusive hoppiness, there is some maltiness too, but you’ll never shake noticing the sweet grapefruity bitterness.

I don’t know what it was, but the sample I got of this beer was pretty awful. Clear golden pour with a small sudsy white head. Diaper and rot, turning to dirt, citrus, and dankness. Flavor is actually much better. Citrus peel, orange, grass, and herbals with a medium palate and low carbonation.
