4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 NeonLX (258) - Wisconsin, USA - FEB 7, 2003
UPDATED: JUL 1, 2003 Pours a medium amber with a luscious-looking head; very slightly cloudy. Aroma doesn't quiet convey the full effect of the hops that hits you with the first taste. Wow, this stuff is supercharged with hops. Immediate grapefruity taste with an interesting suggestion of pine quickly following up. Lingering citrus aftertaste. Very nice palate with a decent body. Not especially heavy so it's easy to put one of these away without feeling bloated. Super-dee-duper!

Avery is FINALLY available in the San Francisco Bay Area!!!! This beer is absolutely crystal clear. Has the color of a fine orange muscat wine rather than a beer. Very lacy head that falls pretty quickly, but leaves lots on the glass sides. Microfine carbonation that you can taste rather than simply see. Nice hop aroma. Not overpowering like some IPAs are these days. It says, "Yes, there are hops in there." Flavor is also hoppy, but not overpowering. I’m guessing Centennials or Cascades and perhaps something else to even it out. They say its the hoppiest in Colorado. Perhaps by IBU count, but its smooth. Bitterness resides on the palate in the aftertaste. I actually think I’d prefer to drink this over Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (my father is rolling in his grave right now!!).

This was cool! I couldn’t remember the name of the IPA that I had last night, so I thought, ’Oh, hell, I’ll just type ’ipa’ and scan down the list’, and this is the first one. I *really* liked the smell of this stuff, the crisp floral hoppiness was nicely pronounced and I think I could pick out every citrus fruit known to mankind in the nose. The flavor didn’t quite follow through but it was still nicely balanced. This would be a good IPA for those who are put off by west-coast breweries hopping the shit out of their beers.

A nice tasting IPA that is not lacking flavor or character. The assertive hop bite is definatly present almost too much as there seems to be a bit too much bitterness for the malt (my god I am hop head and I just said that?) Overall it really kicks the tastebuds in and is a nice representation of a western American IPA. Beautiful color and head formation.

UPDATED: DEC 23, 2003 Reminded me of the Stone IPA. Very VERY hoppy. Nice head with the pour and a good deep golden color. I highly recommend this! Had this in Steamboat Springs.

a lot paler than i expected but a nice frothy head.. nice hop smell. it was such a sweet smell after so many shitty lager types. the hops just explode in your mouth with citrus goodness. it is an awesome beer and it makes me sad that i only have one

I really like this IPA. It’s very strong in the hops, but maintains a crisp drinkability. It doesn’t linger like a double ipa would (not that there’s anything wrong with that). If you want a delicious hoppy beer to drink with a meal and not interfere (too much), drink this beer. I’d drink this beer any day of the year. I love it.

Had in bottles in a draft beer bar. You know the bar I’m talking about.... 36 taps and 34 of them are some form of light lager crap. This beer rocked that night though. Fresh, floral with that hoppy ending and solid body we all know and love in an American IPA. This one is so smooth and drinkable.
