4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 joe1510 (501) - Illinois, USA - JAN 19, 2009
12oz Bottle
Received this in a recent trade with russpowell, thanks for all the great beer Russ! Avery’s IPA pours with a clear deep golden body and faint but noticeable orange highlights, especially when backlit. The dense cotton white head grew to two fingers and eventually fell to one leaving sticky arched lacing on its way. A few streams of carbonation bubbles work their way to the surface. Each drink leaves behind more sticky lacing.
There’s a good deal of earthy citric hoppiness as soon as I take a whiff. Orange and grapefruit dominate although the orange comes out on top. There’s not a whole lot of malt present but what’s there does the job nicely. The malt profile comes across as pale and somewhat cake like. I prefer my IPAs on the hop dominated side of the spectrum and this delivers.
The expectations the nose laid down are met and surpassed in the flavor. The pale maltiness is there but the hops are the showcase of this beer. The grapefruit jumps out at me right away with the orange close behind. Finishes with a zesty citric zing and a touch of malty sweetness to keep the hopping from running out of control. This is a very good IPA.
The body of this beer really fits well. Medium bodied with a snappy carbonation that keeps things moving quickly. The bitterness is there at first but grows and grows with each sip.
A very easy drinking IPA. The citric leanings make it all at once refreshing and bitter. This glass is disappearing very quickly.
This is an excellent IPA from Avery. I’ve passed this one up over and over again in favor of seasonals and such. This teaches me to start picking up more of the year round offerings instead of passing them by. Thanks again for a quality IPA Russ.

Nice label with an old map on it. Clear honey pour with modest head. Strong, first-rate scent of honey-like malts and hops. Well-rounded and balanced IPA flavor - solid malts, tasty hops, some orange in there, maybe even a dash of spices too. Medium-light carbonation. This is a super IPA, and another winner from Avery.

On tap. Sweet, caramel smell. Not the normal overly hoppy smell that I expected. Perfect amber color with great lacing. Lots of sweet maltiness for an IPA. One of my favorite IPAs - smooth and not overly bitter (good for a newbie like myself). A GREAT BALANCE of malt and hops. It interacts in the mouth perfectly. Perfect amount of water to not overwhelm the palate with bitterness. I really enjoyed the smooth sweetness with the perfect hoppy finish. No intense drying effect like most IPAs I’ve tried. Progression is great. I can’t wait to have this again.

Bottle at Folkets Hus, Kristinehamn. A big surprise to find this stuff here. Pours a orange color with a big white head, leaving some lacing on the glass. Aroma is fresh and hoppy with tropical fruits, pineapple, grass, resin and some caramely malt. Flavour is also hoppy with a nice fresh tropical fruit character (pineapple), grass, caramel and nice resinous bitterness. Body is medium with a rather lively, but nice, carbonation. I seldom get my IPAs this fresh at pubs in Sweden, and at newly open place in a small town where the most interesting beer usually is "Murphy’s Irish Stout" or similiar this was a big, big surprise!

I think that of the IPA’s that I have had, The Avery IPA has one of the best aromas. I consider this IPA one of the standards when I go out and buy a sixer of it.

My first brew from Avery, and quite a tasty one at that! It has the trademark qualitys of a fine IPA, Hoppy, citrusy, but a little smokeyness on the finish which made it superb. Had this in the bottle(poured into a glass of course) at the Box bar in Plymouth, MI

Top Tier IPA, nice hops, nice malt and sweetness to it to balance it pretty perfectly, had it out of a can which I think enhanced the experience

Bottle. 12 oz. Pours slightly hazy light orange with a subtle, off-white head. Aroma of apples, champagne, hops, grapes. honey, and wheat. Medium body with a tart finish. Good IPA.
