HopDuvel99 (39), Tennessee, USA Jan 26, 2009 Very dark reddish-brown with a small light brown head. Aroma is licorice/anise and molasses. Wow. Explosion of intense flavors: hops, roasty malt, molasses, alcohol. Very full-bodied with a thick mouthfeel. All dials set to 11. Jukkabro (2983), Tampere, Finland Jan 23, 2009 Black colored with little brown head. Strong licoricy aroma with vinous notes, raisinny notes with vanilla, mild alcohol and berries also here. Medium to full bodied, oily palate. Flavor is rich too with licorice and wine dominating, raisins here too. Aftertaste is licoricy still with mild alcohol and vinous wooden note. Fine one jstraw (750), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 20, 2009 Black with big, foamy brown head / Big complex roast malt nose / Full bodied, moderately sweet, with rich malts, good balance, and long, but hot finish / Flavors of roast barley, nuts, dark fruit, dark roast coffee, and bittersweet chocolate / Outstanding flavors, but overly hot finish detracts. djd07 (724), Houston, Texas, USA Jan 17, 2009 Bottle as shown. Pours a very dark brown almost black with a very small paper thin tan head that diminishes rather quickly to nothing. The aroma is a roasted malt with chocolate and coffee. Decent spotty lacing on the glass. The taste is roasted malt with brown sugar coffee and a bitter finish. Does not hide the alcohol well as it is very present in the finish and is a bit overpowering. Still a very good imperial stout from Avery. blutt59 (2045), Dallas, Texas, USA Jan 9, 2009 bottle, black pour with short lived tqn head, aromas of oak and plums, flavor is very sweet with a strong alcohol bite, finish is sweet and metallic trevor211 (500), Seattle, Washington, USA Jan 8, 2009 Pours a shiny black, with a very pretty dark tan head. Smells of burnt nuts and caramel - maybe a peanut brittle?, (good) beef jerky, anise / licorice, and some stale coffee. Wow is the alcohol ever readily apparent. This has some burn to it. Flavor is a bit sweeter than the aroma lets on - some chocolate and molasses comes through, but this is still very, very dry. Thick, and syrupy, with a bit of licorice as well (the anise they mention). Man is this stuff powerful - very hot! mikalooch (159), , New Jersey, USA Jan 7, 2009 Pours motor oil black with a cream colored head. Smells like burnt peanuts, malt and hops with a bit of coffee, smell almost charred. Caramel, roasted chicory, toasted marshmallow, and burnt coffee flavor. Very sticky mouthfeel, alcohol is apparent. This one packs a punch. Very intense tasting, a bit of sweetness makes it enjoyable fidelis83 (709), Clinton, Iowa, USA Jan 3, 2009 November, 2006 bottle that has been mocking me from the deepest reaches of my fridge for quite some time. Pours absolutely black with a tall caramel brown head that lasts forever and leaves a small amount of nice, frothy, tan lacing. Aroma is slightly burnt caramel, peanut brittle, very ripe nectarines and cherries, grape stems, rum, and a big shot of espresso. There are definitely some floral hops in there as well no doubt helping out with the fruitier notes. Flavor starts off playfull and somewhat light: lots of dark fruit, fresh cherries, toasted marshmallows, a hint of caramel and vanilla. The more rich flavors come in toward the middle, port wine, dark chocolate covered cherries, char, roast, some espresso sweetened with cane sugar and malted milk, pungent dried dark fruits, and a hint of licorice. Finishes strong with slightly charred sweet rye toast, cola, chocolate covered coffee bean, slightly grainy roast malt, some bitter hops and a decent showing by floral hops. The aftertaste is like a burnt orange blossom. Palate is thick, syrupy, sweet, very low on carbonation (in a good way) full of warming alcohol, and seems oddly acidic as my teeth are sort of soft and gripping each other as if I had just drank a P3psi cola. I would love to try the sour cherry version.
