Guerde (693), Welcome, Minnesota, USA May 4, 2008 (bottle) Pours black with a dark tan head. Aroma is strong with coffee, chocolate and dark fruit, but is equally strong with sharp alcohol. The taste is reminiscent of other Avery beers; cloyingly sweet, with a ton of booze. What is there is some chocolate and dark fruit, with a slightly roasted finish, that is again counterbalanced by the large amount of alcohol as well. BeerGestapo (725), Windsor, Pennsylvania, USA May 3, 2008 (USA) Courtesy of AFI96, Thanks Waylo!! I let this brew warm up before i drank it, Black in color with a lg-brown head with some nice lacing. The aroma is of smoky malts, chocolate, liqorice, and alcohol. The mouthfeel is bitter with coffee, molasses, and raisin notes. The 16% does come through and is pretty strong, a bit overpowering !!! I don’t think i could drink 2 of them one after another....lol kegbear (265), Orange, California, USA May 2, 2008 Dark almost black color with a thick dark head. Strong alcohol comes through, but it is somewhat hidden considering this is 16%. Taste of coffe, chocolate and anise. Very nice strong stout. larsniclas (3383), Gothenburg, Sweden May 1, 2008 Bottled. Thx rlgk.
Pitch black with a large brownish head.
Salty and smoked with soy-like palate. Oak and sweet, dried fruits. Nephilium (541), Ohio, USA Apr 28, 2008 (Batch 3 bottle) Aroma starts with alcohol, there are some chocolate and coffee notes lurking behind the alcohol burn. Pours opaque black with a large tan head. It has a very full and thick mouthfeel. The flavor is a touch of alcohol, a bit of sweetness, and then a long coffee finish. Overall, this is quite tasty. I think some time in the cellar to calm down some of the alcohol notes would do good things for this beer. Now to get some more and test for myself. crowderm (275), Recklinghausen, Germany Apr 26, 2008 Pours a beautiful, dark, syrupy black, with a lingering tan head and some nice lacing. The aroma is pretty subtle, but pleasant - dark fruit, chocolate and burnt sugar. The flavor is great. Grapes, figs, prunes, tons of dark chocolate and some definite bitter coffee notes in the finished. Also some spicy herb notes in there. Wow, very complex. The alcohol is impressively hidden however. The palate is amazing. Thick, syrupy, very full, fantastic. Very impressive beer...not something I would drink every day, but everyone should try this at least once. smith4498 (825), Miami, Florida, USA Apr 22, 2008 Batch #2, Bottled Nov. 2006. Pours black with ruby highlights and a brown head. Aromas of burnt malts, coffee, and alcohol. Flavor is syrupy sweet with burnt malts, toffee, coffee, and dark fruits . Alcohol comes through but isn’t as strong as you would think for 16%. Full body with minimal carbonation and a syrupy mouthfeel. This one will kick your ass! Floback (333), Naples, Florida, USA Apr 20, 2008 12 ounce bottle from Haskell’s. Pours a syrup-like consistency with a raven-brown color and a rim of brown head. Nose is dark fruits, sawdust, and plum. Flavors provide exclamations of toffee, bittersweet baking chocolate, coffee, and soy sauce. A touch of hops in the forefront with a syrupy mouthfeel all around. Medium carbonation is a nice touch. Enormous body; intense and heavy. Alcohol warms the throat on the way down and is apparent in every sip. Slightly difficult to drink, but this got better over time.
