Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

Thanks to hopscotch for this terrible experience. Should have had a friend around to give this to after I tasted it. Scary rude off aroma. Smells like rotting vegetable matter. Volatile chocolate. Very dark yet has no gunk on the bottom of the bottle. Black coffee with chocolate and whiskey. Ooooh. Ugh. Chocolate mousse head. Flat oily coating palate. Gaggingly oppressive and one of the worst beers I’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting. Frightening from the first sip. This is just plain yucky stuff! Brutal! Dude! WTF! Over the top. Forget about it? What did I say? Can’t remember. I think I’ll go to sleep now........ zzzzz.......did I mention that it hides it’s 16% well? Goodnight. The apex of imperial stouts! Opposite of old heathen. Ignore my numbers and I hope my enjoyability rating does not hurt the stature of this percentile.

Bottled 2007. Pours pitch black and syrupy. Aromas of roasted espresso, roasted coffee malts, cherries, golden raisins, rum, melted bittersweet chocolate, and anise emanate feet above my snifter. A rich and chewy mouth feel contains flavors of heavy rum soaked raisins and cherries, devilishly dark and potent bittersweet chocolate cake laced with rum, vinous alcohol and over-ripened grapes appear mid-body only to be washed away by thick espresso and licorice. A splash of rum makes yet another appearance capping it all off with alcohol heat and a luxurious smooth finish. This is a very fine sipper.

Bottled poured in a tulip. AMS pours as black as Satan’s heart with a huge, creamy tan head. The aroma is Hellishly good and pervasive. Chocolate, vanilla, rum, cherries, caramel and raisins insinuate their way from an arm’s length away. This heavy stout has a strong raisin and rum flavor that’s supported by a base of chocolate. The body is oily and chewy, rich and alcoholic. Even though this isn’t the best imperial stout I’ve had it is a grand enjoyment.

Dark burgundy hues, with a chocolate head of medium size. Rich roasted aromas of coffee and chocolate. Super big mouth feel, but not with the sticky finish. Coffee and chocolate flavors with vanilla spices layered within. Refreshing yet bold as the alcohol will sneak up on you.

Bottle @ Ølbaren. [thank you, BelJohansen]
Pours a deep black with a little creamy film head. Aroma is sweet, some coffee and lots of hops. Nice flavour, lots of hops and a clear alcohol presence mixing with chocolate, coffee and light vanilla. Okay balance considering it it quite extreme.

Black with rich brown short lasting head. Sweet complex and roasted flavor that holds liquerice, coffee, chocolate, vanilla and alcohol. Complex roasted flavor with spices, coffee, liquerice and chocolate. Alcohol is surprinsingly well hidden.

Poured into a large bordeaux glass. Pours a visibly viscous black colour with a late-forming brown head with good lacing and legs like a fine brandy. The nose is vinous and woody with strong star anise, cherry and roasted espresso maltyness. This is an overwheling, seriously high gravity beer. It might as well be fermeted fudge. The flavour entertains suggestions of rum-soaked rainsins, baker’s cocoa, espresso, smoke, molasses, caramel, dark cherries and licorice with a decent amount of booze, but not as much as I’d expect from a 16% abv. Syrupy, thick body with perfectly matched, soft, yet tingly carbonation. An ENORMOUS, robust brew with trememdous flavour and body that’s o’ so satisfying. I would buy it more often if not for the price, which cost me 8$ a 12 oz.
