Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

Batch 1 (Jan 2006): 15.1% ABV.
Batch 2 (Nov 2006): 16.03% ABV.
Batch 3 (Nov 2007): 16% ABV.
Batch 4 (Nov 2008): 15.92% ABV.

Daarrrrrkkkk pour. Brown head that goes away fast. Smells of coffee and strongly of chocolate. The taste is amazingly strong. Hides the alcohol. 16%? Very drinkable. Tons of dark chocolate and espresso flavors with a bitter finish. The only downside is that it is a bit too sweet.

Head pours evenly across the top of the beer. It’s a medium to low head with a nice brown color. The aroma is spicy and sweet. The flavor is way to sweet for me you can taste the boozy 16%. It leaves a smokey chocolate taste on your palate and really makes the back right and left sides of your tounge salavate. Good brew I enjoyed it.

Watching the cloud wisp out of the neck of the bottle I feel like I’m staring into the pit of hell. The beer looks great, black with a nice thick head. Smells decent too. Unfortunately, drinking this crap is like drinking teriyaki flavored NyQuil.

Bottle batch 2. Poured a very dark black color with a very brownish tannish head. Aroma at first is of Louisiana Hot Sauce "the brand" and chocolate. The taste is too sweet with a whiskey burn in the end. This beer is over rated and not that great.

Bitter beer face! Blacker than a cancer pateint’s bowel movement and a red head. The odor is primarily coffee, light hints of chocolate and wood. Hides the alcohol extremely well. Tastes of coffee, bittersweetness, sugar. the sugar overpowers everything. Finishes way too sweet.

Batch 2 Bottle. Nose is initially all coffee and chocolate. A second wave of alcohol, light oak and cherry notes follow. The beer is absolutely and entirely pitch black, with a reddish head that soon dissipates to nothing. So far, superb and inviting, but once in the mouth it’s a different story. Although the beer must be commended on its ability to hide 16% abv, it does so with such a cloying sweetness that it can’t really be claimed as a success. The sugar is candy-like, and overpowering of any other flavors. Once that taste becomes acquired and subdued, it gives way to some cherry and coffee flavors. The palate is slightly thin and overly cloying.

(22oz bottle) Courtesy of gracious trader BeerandBlues2. Pours a yellow head with an opaque body. Nose of burnt caramel, nail polish, buttery malt with an aroma cantaloupe. Extreme bitter hops, oily, soya sauce. Over the top. Extreme in un-balanced. Poor performance...

Very dark beer, tasting of coffee and alcohol. Pours thick with little to no head. Definetly a beer you need to take time with. This is another beer I believe will keep you warm in the winter.
