Cornfield (4255), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Apr 3, 2006 January 2006 bottling, Batch 1: May the gods save us from this demon ale! Damnably drinkable dark brown brew crowned by a falling, burnt umber head that transforms into a dark halo in a final mockery before it fades completely. The aroma is an amorphous blending of prunes, seared raisins, licorice, alcohol, a sharply bitter malt, burnt barley, strong coffee, bitter chocolate, charred oak, and a light floral hopping. Well, forget the hopping. I was possessed when I wrote that. This is smooth to drink, slowly burning the tongue as it goes down. A stabbing rum-like sweetness stabs forward in the tasting, surrounded by a legion of flavors reflected from the aroma. The finish is a prolonged bitter-sweetness with a low alcohol burn. Not bad. Not bad at all. EVIL!

carruthm (365), Seattle, Washington, USA Aug 28, 2008 V - Pouts thick oily black with a one to two-finger dark tan head
A - dark chocolate with dark rum and cherries
T - slight burn from the alcohol then a mellowing into chocolaty bourbon. Anise is noticeable at the end.
P - leaves a lasting film and warming in the mouth. logan_townsend (14), bonner springs, Kansas, USA Aug 27, 2008 Pours dark, through no part of the pouring process could i see through this beer at all. Lovely plain brown head. Lacing leaves a bit to be desired. Chocolate comes through heavy in the aroma as well as some alcohol. Blamo! tons of flavor, a bit overwhelming at first. The chocolate comes through and delivers like it has a bit of smoke. Feels very thick, a very slight alcohol burn for its 16 abv (3rd batch). A very fun experience for me not being a stout fan. edden (907), cow- lumbus, Ohio, USA Aug 24, 2008 8/23/08: Bottle. Espresso colored body with a chocolate colored, rich thick head. Nose of chocolate, espresso, malt and alcohol. Holy batman, tons of flavor. Black cherry cordial, espresso, raisin, brown sugar, and alcohol. Finish is sweet, sticky and lingering. Batch #2. mwelsh13 (136), Maryland, USA Aug 23, 2008 Deep brown opaque color with a nice brown head. Yum is all that comes to mind with the flavor and aroma. Chocolate, toffee, raisin, and dark fruits in the aroma. Sweet taste but nicely balanced for a 16% beer. Almost too thick, but again for its ABV it is understandable. Going to grab a few more and sit on them to see what happens. brokephibroke (37), , Colorado, USA Aug 19, 2008 Beautiful thick black pour with a nice, thick short lasting chocolate milk head. Definate fresh roast burnt coffee aroma with a bright sweetness along for the ride. Taste is sweet, mince-meat like with a (and I hate to say it) licorice finish, it also has soy sauce in there. Palate is great, thick and coating with a long finish. Got to hand it to Avery on this unique brew.
