Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

UPDATED: OCT 22, 2014 Bottle pour thick black with big dark tan head. Aroma is rich roast, dark fruits, slight sweet. Taste is similar with big intense roast and a sweet boozy finish, hard to finish a bottle though

"i agree with the last rating, but at a lower level...at the start, the alcohol seemed like half of itís 16%, but was more assertive by the end. Never did it taste like a 16%-18% beer, though. I thought the sheer complexity of the aroma and flavor were nice, although it wasnít as smooth as World Wide from DFH, but maybe more complex. Dark, chocolate covered fruits, coffee, slight smoke, molasses. hops. A big sipping beer in every way, with a lasting finish. Well done."

Deep roasted and sweet flavor, not as balanced as some other bourbon stouts (to be expected) but very well executed as Avery frequently does. A little on the sweet side for my taste, but very good nonetheless.

Head is initially small, frothy, dark brown, mostly diminishing. Body is black (opaque, flashlight tested). Aroma is moderately to heavily malty (chocolate syrup, fudge, roasted grain), lightly hoppy (grapefruit, resin), with notes of alcohol and vanilla. Flavor is heavily to harshly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Full body, syrupy texture, lively/soft carbonation, heavily alcoholic. At last, this yearís Meph has come back down pretty close to the ABV of batch 1, and itís quite a bit better than batch 2 and 5 were. Itís still a hot mess of sugar and booze, of course, but thatís what this brewery is primarily about. And hey, at least thereís a little bit about it to enjoy again.

2012 vintage with ABV of 16.2%. Oily black liquid that leaves a coating of oily brown film when I swirl the snifter. The aroma is almost like a port wine, deep dark fruit, mostly like prunes. Hints of burnt coffee bean, earthy.

After I sip this I am again reminded of a port wine type flavor. Wood, red grapes, dark fruits, chocolate and tobacco. Hints of cherries and Jeez even after two years the alcohol is noticeable in the sip as well as the deep warming burn after the sip. The body is pretty nice and the texture is on the oily side. I could have held this another year but.... I wanted a monster stout and by God, this is one.

2007 bottle thanks bobby. Black pour with tan head. Black and dark malts, sweetness, pretty mild for 16%. Flavors are dark and malty, pretty mild, not too hot, nice beer.

Batch 8, tasted @ two years old. Aroma is dark and dry with some tobacco. Appearance is black with a thin head. Taste is of dark fruit and a stout dark malt with loads of dryness. Hints of coffee and rum. Palate is dry and sweet. Overall, a good stout. Hard to believe it is two years old because the flavors are so bright. Would like to try it spirit barreled. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Batch 7. Koleminer20 was gracious enough to share. All hail koleminer20. Aroma is bourbon, licorice, vanilla, chocolate, slight booze. Appearance is black as night, tan head. Taste is roasty, licorice, some booze presence but subtle, lots of bourbon. Mouthfeel is thick. Real thick. The subtle booze has caused my sinuses to burn...not in such a bad way that itís unpleasant but itís quite noticeable. Overall...wow. This beer is quite good. The only thing hindering it is that it may be a little too intense. But still definitely worth a shot.

Had the 16.2% addition. Nice and smokey. Very heavy but worth every sip. Only share with someone who appreciates the rich, deep, darkness of a stout on fire.
