Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

12.04.2015, 0,35l bottle (2014 vintage) @ home:
Big brown creamy longlasting head. Aroma is slightly rich and sweet, dark malts, caramel, soy sauce, dark sugar, chocolate, coffee, grass, alcohol, hops, pine needles, licorice. Taste is kind of harsh and boozy, sour coffee, booze, harsh hops, grass, dark malts, burnt caramel, pine needles, bark, minerals. Longlasting bitterness, harsh boozy mouthfeel. A typical beer I need to rerate at some point, when it’s been aged for many many years.

Black color, brown head. Milk chocolate nose, coffee, licorice, brown sugar, alcohol, bread. Roasted malt taste, vanilla, coffee, alcohol, brown sugar, chocolate. Full body, soft carbonation, creamy mouthfeel, oily texture, warming. A bit over the top and too much alcohol for my liking. Personal stats: Rating #666.

Bottle from Breeze Thru. Cellar aged 6 months. Not $1/ounce, but in that ballpark. Was looking for Uncle Jacob, but have not had this in years so picked it up. Very, very dark brown pour with a brown head leaving some spotty lacing. Nose has heavy espresso, molasses, bakers chocolate, and caramel. Taste is of rich thick layered choco/coffee; espresso laced with dark chocolate. Also there are nuts, caramel malts and cocoa. Quite thick. Little nuance here - it is big and solid and thick. Full bodied with surprisingly small alcohol presence for as big as it is. Finishes more bitter and thick than sweet, but that sweetness is there. This is too burly to love, but it is quite good. 15.7

Pours a murky dark brown with a solid finger of chocolate milk coloured head. There’s nothing in the appearance hinting at the sinister nature of this stout, but a fragrant aroma immideately spreads out from the glass. Thick, dark aromas of mushroom soy, wet cardboard, dark wholegrain bread, sweet licorice, forest floor and spent matches. The palate is full bodied, probably the thickest I’ve tasted (thicker than the old 18.2% ABV Tokyo even), but the sweetness is actually not overwhelming, almost balanced even. Slightly boosy mid-palate and a long finish with solid bitterness and lingering sweetness. Extremely exciting and well made.
