UPDATED: JAN 29, 2004 2003 Bottle. Yes, your winter ale does have a gorgeous mahogany hue, but it would be better if your winter ale didnt have a clear mahogany hue. What does Avery have against bottle conditioning??? Well anyways, it smelled pretty good, a mild cherry aroma, some drier nutty flavors and a touch of alcohol. Almost no head, but ends up with a ton of lacing. I really enjoyed the lack of spices, it was a nice change on the winter beer. Didnt know what to expect (which is a feeling I love having going into a beer). Opens up with a big flavorful cherry-caramel malt that is soft, and very balanced. Some dry nutty flavors make their way in, I wouldnt have guessed hazelnuts, maybe walnuts, but whatever, it adds a nice element of complexity. Finish ends with a dry roasty appeal and some alcohol. Aftertaste was a bit odd, that weird avery hops thing coming in, with some acidic/bitter hops. I could actually see the flavor melding together better after another year or so. Body is medium and has a soft/lightly syrupy, chewy texture with a good amount of carbonation. Dosent have the complexity of some of the best English Strongs and the flavor thins out a bit, but it's still above average.

roasted malt aroma. deep brown body with hints of red. good amount of almond colored head which quickly diminishes to a thin ring of carbonation. some lacing. roasted malt flavor with a slight amount of sourness. minimal amount of a bitter hop finish.

Nice dark red-brown body with a thin, tan head. Lacing.
Roasted malt aroma dominates. The other aroma which I can't figure out must be the hazelnut.
Sweet and malty. A little bit of hop flavor and some oxidation. Lingering bitterness is a bit unusual for the style but could mellow with age. Alcohol is well-hidden.
Full-bodied and very smooth.

Deep dark amber brown. Fragrant aroma of malts with subtle hints of toffee, citrus, and nuts. Full bodied with a sweet bitter mouthfeel. Flavors linger into the dry aftertaste. A superlative winter warmer. Avery hits the target again.

My first impression of this was "barleywine lite". Prunes, thick/bready malts, touch of acidity in both aroma and flavors. Bit of pear in the nose. Medium body. I would go with a good barley instead of this any day.

UPDATED: OCT 29, 2004 Smells nutty/malty/some bullion hops(resiny,spicy w/ a tease of citrus).Looks very nice/heady/decent lace.Super smooth/8% somewhat well-hidden.Tastes nutty/slightly spicy/roasty, raisins/.Great stuff.I love Avery.Bottled on 10-3-03(Yes!) Tried the 9-28-04 batch, and I must say I Love This Beer when it’s fresh,it ages well but Fresh is where it’s at. It gets some stranger notes when aged(hops shine more as the malts get a almost a sour twinge to it?All I know is, the bitterness is more pronounced when aged.

Very peculiar character. Fruit and spice in aroma, malty sweetness, some toffee in the flavor. Pretty good beer. Alcohol is well-hidden. Complex malts.

What a treat it was last Thursday night, as this grizzled old veteran of the “Phoenix Street Wars”, made it safe and sound to my home away from home “Papago Brewery” for “Deschutes Promo Night”, and low and behold, not only was there three great Deschutes for me to sample, but some Chimay Millennium 01 in the one and a half liter bottles, and another favorite brewery was represented also, Avery in the form of “Old Jubilation”! The God’s of beer were extra special to me for sure, maybe as a reward for not drawing from my holster the old Colt 45 Six-Shooter and popping off a few of the ID10T’s, that invest the streets of Phoenix.
The beer projects a translucent deep brown color, the head piled high supported by the glass, all frothy and light tan, the lace a filmy sheet draped over this gorgeous temptress of the brewers art. The floral aroma of the hops greets you first, followed by the sweet malt; also I sense a hint of alcohol, brandy like a better description, this nose a portent of things to come for the lucky imbiber of this brew. Front is ambrosial and thickly malted, the top full and round, the finish devilishly acidic and the hops also Mephistophelian in their spiciness, dry and lingering aftertaste that ends this superexcellent beer.

Deep red, nice head, slowly fading. Smelled of balanced malts and hops, very nice. Good palate. Taste is OK, but a bit thin on the end. Wish it had gone more towards a barley wine.

I can not think of a better way to spend a labor day then playing PS2, watching the occasional movie, surfing the net, and drinking/rating beer. I love this country!
