When you open the bottle you can smell the aroma instantly, maybe walnuts roasted over a fire. has a very strong taste with a hint of seasonal flavoring. Has a slight aftertaste. Not a bad beer, just not my type.

(12oz bottle). Pours clear mahogany with thin off-white head. Light carbonation. Aroma of wood, candied sugar, nuts. Taste is semi-sweet with quite a bit of roasty bitterness. Medium bodied with oily texture. Finish is bitter and ’hot’. Not a good beer, imo.
2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 PhillyCraft (1964) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 5, 2012
Bottle on a cold, damp night. Pour is chestnut brown with thick off white head and lacing. Scent was coffee, roasted malts, chocolate bar, and grains. Alittle off in aroma. Taste is mocha, burnt toffee, hops and malts. Lightly carb’d with a medium to fuller body. Reminded me more of a brown ale then a english style. Just ok.

Very oxidized. And its off a keg. Oxidation of the nose and on the tongue. Not a good beer. Some sweet caramel, which is its only redeeming quality.

Not what I expect of a winter beer. Hoppy and no malty flavor. Won’t be purchasing in the future.
2.4 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 k9coug (88) - USA - DEC 16, 2008
Bought this bottle off the bargain shelf at my locale homebrew shop, so don’t know what year it was brewed. It might have been passed its prime. I am surprised by the rating, the alcohol content and the claim of no spicing. Very skeptical that the spiciness was made by malt and hops alone.

11-20-07 bottle
Watery thin brown color. Strange smell of funky malt. Gross taste and mouthfeel. Metallic and has a strong alcohol flavor. It has a sweet alcohol aftertaste that somewhat stings the tongue. Difficult to swallow this weak bodied, strong alcohol flavored brew.

Pours nicely a deep amber brown color, with little carbonation and not much foam. The aroma is of hops and bitter. The taste is nutty and bitter. Not my favorite.

Good mouthfeel was about it, too malty and the alcohol in thus one came through almost sour with a hot finish, says in the description no spices used and it’s true. That is where I think this beer could be much better, with some spice added.
