Our winter ale has a gorgeous mahogany hue, a hint of hazelnuts, and a finish reminiscent of mocha and toffee. No spices, just a perfect blend of five specialty malts. Cellarable for 3+ years.

Some dark cherry flavor along with a bit of burnt toffee, comes in as a bitter flavor. Not bad for 8% at all. Gets a little hotter as it warms but the flavor becomes a bit more of Port. Thanks to Moejuck for this one.

12 oz botle pours a dark reddish brown with a thin head. Aroma is malty and a little bready with some spices coming through. The flavor is much of licorice, (if they were going for this they definitely over did it) and malts, nutty undertones that finish bitter, cloying, and unbalanced. Not one i want to drink again.

From a 12 oz. long neck bottle, 2005 release. Poured a milk chocolate brown with a small foamy off-white head that settled into a thin bubbly lacing. Aromas of mocha and nuts, a soft dark ripe fruitiness, a light vanilla and a bit woody alcohol. Moderate carbonation and a softly crisp, smooth light-medium bodied mouthfeel. Tastes of a plum fruitiness, nuts and a powdery mocha, vanilla with a touch of toffee in the middle, earthy, the alcohol is slightly noticeable, a bit solvent like, and a nutty, powdery finish. Not a bad winter seasonal from Avery, but I think I will try a fresh bottle this December, I thought the flavors were a kind of muted.

(bottle)poured into a pint. poured a dark amber with full frothy head. has a sweet bitter hoppy aroma. gives a slight bitter front with sweet middle and an acidic finish. it is slightly loose(watery) on the palate. there are definitly spices evident within this seasonal. good for the occasion or in a tasting line up, but I prefer a few other seasonals.

Licorise, sweet aroma. Red with lasting head. Roasted, sweet malts. Smooth roast finish.

UPDATED: APR 11, 2008 Dark brown with ruby. Head is big and airy; dissipating expediently. Dark fruit aroma of prunes and rum raisin with molasses and some roastiness. Some alcohol in nose as well. Taste is similar but with "cough syrup" (as one reviewer astutely opined) towards the end. Finish is a nasty combination of alcohol and cough syrup. Hibernation Ale is much better.

Bottle. Bright, rich maroonish/red color. A midsized white head. The nose is just a touch of malt, but very thin. Sweet malty flavor, honey, nuts, and maybe a bit of candy. It finishes with more alcohol burn than I’d wanted from a beer this thin. A fizzier than normal mouthfeel. I expected more from this one.

A deep, dark, red/orange with a dense, long lasting foam. Minerally/metallic aroma with no hops and low malt. A very viscous and full bodied mouthfeel. The flavor is very malty with a subdued hop presence. A typical winter warmer and not a whole lot of personality

Draft at the tap room. Pours a reddish brown with a bit of dirty brown head. Sugary malt caramel and toffee nose, adn just the slightest bit of herbal hop noes. Flavor is just kind of one note burnt toasted malt. I must be missing something. Medium body with lots of harsh carbonation and a dry finish. This one seems bland to me.

Medium brown with some head. Aroma is sweet and malty like an English b-wine. Tastes a bit hoppy up front, but quickly becomes all malt. Sort of soapy finish. Mediocre.
