Our winter ale has a gorgeous mahogany hue, a hint of hazelnuts, and a finish reminiscent of mocha and toffee. No spices, just a perfect blend of five specialty malts. Cellarable for 3+ years.

UPDATED: AUG 29, 2009 Massively underrated. Unlike most run-of-the-mill holiday offerings, this beer isnít jacked up on spice just to meet the expectations of the category. The considerable alcohol Ƙ% ABV) isnít forward, and takes a back seat...this is a lovely, malty bastard with some coffee and nuts on the follow through. Especially enjoyed it on tap at Meade Street Station, West Highlands, Denver. Drink after coming in from the snow...thatís why it exists.

One of my favorite winter beers. a ton of complex maltiness with some fruit and just a tinge of alcohol and hops to keep things interesting. Extremely drinkable and a good contrast to my other hoppier winter faves like SNCA. Averyís best beer IMHO.

Pours a big 3 finger off white head. Body is a clear mahogany brown with lots of bubbles rising. Head retention is above average but the lacing is very good Aroma is of sweet roasted caramel malt and some herbal hops. Alcohol is also slightly detected. A bit underwhelming compared to taste First taste reminds me of an English barleywine. Tons of malt come through ranging from flavors of brown sugar to smoked malt and even some copper. Hops are also there, slightly bitter but mostly floral and earthy. Alcohol adds a touch of warmth to the finish. Mouth feel is good. Carbonation is sufficient. Beer is medium bodied, about average consistency for a winter beer. Wish head contributed more to body, it died down towards last quarter of glass. Drink ability was great. Rather session able strong ale. Very complex beer, almost flawless. Winter is my favorite season for beer and this one is one of the best seasonal beers around

1yr old Bottle. Aroma has notes of caramel malts, dried dark fruits, toffee, nutty, and roasted malts. Deep amber hue with an average sized off-white foamy head that mostly diminished and left some lace. Taste is sweet then turns roasted bitter. Palate is full bodied and oily soft. Very good with at least a year on it. Very surprised with this one, very good. Avery still sucks though.

Didnít have much idea about what to expect on this one.... Actually thought it was going to lean more toward the golden side of things but turned out to be an English style ale. Low carbonation, and a head that didnít last longer than a sneeze. Nice mouthfeel, not too smooth. Good amount of hops, kind of like an old war wound. They just stick around. Thereís plenty of independent notes to this ale, which makes it the character deep. The only note that didnít feel right was the copper one while it was on the tongue. I could see how this would be excellent aged. The score would probably go up higher then.

Bottle. First off, just gonna point out that I think this newest batch is slightly different from the older ones. Theyíve bumped up the abv a bit from 8% to 8.3%, and with that Iím sure has come a change in the overall taste. That out of the way, wow this is a damn fine seasonal! Pours a ruby, amber color with a small head thatís quick to leave. The aroma is slightly sweet with hints of toffee and fruit. Tastes of roasted malt, slight chocolate, some nuts and some toffee. The finish is sweet with a hint of bitterness at the end. So impressions. Itís a very solid winter seasonal, and quite a bit different from what I was expecting from Avery. This is actually one of my new favorites from them. The woody hints at the end, and the roasted malts go well with the slight hop bitterness and I think this beer has a great balance overall. Glad I grabbed a couple of bottles of this instead of just one! Iíll be on the lookout for this again, and so should everyone else! 8.3% alcohol.

On tap. This one is rich and creamy with a HUGE wallop of dark fruits that just punches you int he face. This is along with some mild toasty bitterness and some thick caramel and sugary flavors.

12 oz bottle. Pours root beer brown with a small beige head that falls into a skiff of foam fairly quick; leaves some lace. Aroma is all bready malts, not much else; some roasty nuttiness and dark fruit come through as it warms up. Taste is a little sweet, a little bitter, a little tart; nice and roasted woody flavor. Hands down one of the best winter warmers Iíve ever had.

On tap at HopCat, Grand Rapids, MI. We have a winner! Of the 9 beers I sampled at HopCat, this was the favourite. Deep brown with a perfect creamy head. Creamy and malty aroma. Taste is sweet toasted marshmallows, with a dry bitter finish, and a hint of alcohol. Smooth full body. Great stuff.

Dark red pour from draft, three fingers of taupe foam. Seasonal spice aroma, slight caramel flavor, slight roast finish. A must try.
